TTC after 35

1st OBGYN Appt

Hi,  This is only my 3rd month trying, but being 42, I don't want to wait 6 months before seeing my OBGYN to have some basic testing done.  Tonight is just a meeting of the minds, I think he is going to discuss what we are doing, etc.  Anyone have any insight on what I should expect in this meeting tonight?  I plan on bringing my fertility charts with me.  DH is not coming with me, but drs office said that it was not necessary for him to come tonight, that it was his choice.  He has so much mechanical work to get done & asked if I minded if he stayed home to get the cars fixed.  I told him no problem.

Besides, I didn't tell him that I started using OPK yet.  Granted, it is a "new" step I am taking - I only bought them a week ago.  I am so excited because I got two positives yesterday & today!!!

Thanks.

Re: 1st OBGYN Appt

  • Best of luck!  Some women have no issues over 40.  I started TTC at 41, and after reviewing my initial bloodwork (highly recommend you get an AMH and Day 3 bloodwork to include FSH), my OB/GYN's office sent me directly to an RE.

  • Thanks.  When I was there for my annual last October, he handed me an RE's business card.  We didn't start ttc until our wedding night (which was in June).

We want to do this naturally & are not interested in taking any type of drugs, so I never contacted the RE.  After doing more homework & the reading info on the www, I learned that an RE doesn't necessarily mean drugs.  I wonder if he is going to make me go that route.

I wrote down those two tests you mentioned & will ask him to run them.  This dr is pretty easy going, so I think he will do what he can on his end for me before I have to go to the RE.

    Tx

  • Sounds like you have a good game plan for your visit.  You will probably just spend the time talking about your options and what testing you have in your future.  You are definitely ahead of the game by already charting & using the OPKs - that should give you and your doctor some good insight throughout the process.  Good luck!
Me 39 & suspected PCOS, DH 42. Went off BCP when we got married in 11/11, seriously TTC since 3/12.  Six cycles of clomid = BFNs.  Suspected endometriosis & HSG showed both tubes blocked.  Sept 2013 IVF 5D transfer of two perfect embryos = BFN.  Started acupuncture and taking time off to drop some pounds & get healthier before FET in April 2014.
  • Boy, what a dissapointing visit.  It is making me think I need a new dr...  He was running over an hour late, but that is so common for this OBGYN office.  We sat down in his office & while he was reading my chart he asks me my age.  When I tell him 42, you see his face drop.  He wanted to know what I have been doing to ttc.  I told him charting, opks, taking vitamins, etc & he went right to the comment - well, I am probably just going to refer you to an RE.  I told him that we are not interested in using any type of drugs to conceive & he then told me about IUI, which I know my DH would not go for.  My DH feels that if it doesn't happen naturally, then it was not meant to happen.  At the end of the meeting, as he was walking me up to the receptionist, I asked him about the testing he can do on me & he said, yes, to see him at day 5 (or 7 can't remember now & paper is at home) of my period & he would do a few tests.

Ugh, how dissapointing...  Luckily I was in a very good mood because I had my first "stretchy eggwhite" that day (never experienced that type of discharge) & knew we were going to ttc that evening.  I had 3 days of + opk (today being the 3rd day), so things are looking very possible :)  I am going to stay positive & not let that meeting get me down.  In fact, I may start looking for an OBGYN in my "new" neighborhood, since visiting this dr is a 35 min drive if I go to the main office.
