I picked Nicholas up from day care on Tuesday to find him being held by a teacher with a paci in his mouth and a welt across his face. I come to find out he had 2 accident reports--he got hurt at 3:10pm (bitten on the wrist) and at 4:00pm (a kid fell and tried to grab Nicholas for support and scratched his face near his eye and basically gave him a black eye).
Nicholas has now had 5 incident reports in the last year--3 of them were bites. This seems like a lot to me. Is my kid just unlucky? Is this more common than I think? I'm having trouble understanding why he keeps getting bitten and hurt because even when Nicholas is teething he doesn't bite anyone. Should I be concerned? Please help me put this in perspective...thanks!
Re: How much is too much?
I'd be worried if you were getting the bitemarks if there were no incident reports, but unfortunately bumps and bruises are just part of it, whether your LO is in daycare or not. Lexi got bit 3 times, but in 2 days! And none since then, thank goodness. I really believe the teachers were doing everything they could, but how do you stop something like that when it's a 1 year old doing the biting?
We went through a period when we were getting multiple incident report for weeks for a month or two, right about the time all the kids were first learning to walk in her classroom. They were always knocking each other down (ok, my daughter was knocking them down...), tripping and falling, etc.
Unless it seems like there is negligence, like he's getting an incident report for leaping off a dresser or something, I don't think I'd blame the daycare. I know it sucks to see them hurt though!
just think - it's making him tougher
I agree with Carla.
Avery has had 3 incident reports except in my case, Avery was the biter. I felt so bad but there is really nothing they can do. They told me that she never showed signs that she was going to do it because she never did it out of anger (probably a teething thing). She would just walk up to somone start playing and them Bam! I wouldn't worry too much. It does suck though to know your baby is getting hurt.
My concern would be with the bite marksare they coming from the same kid? I think there are rules if a child is biting and after a certain amount of times he can get suspended from the day care for a bit. but inicident reports are going to happen, thats part of life. i was a lead teacher at a day care for a long time and saw a lot. no matter how well each child is watched, its always the moment u turn away for one second to take out a project for the kids that something happens.
I wouldn't be concerned unless the incident reports are all coming from the same kid. At our LOs ages though, biting is common. Even if he's not biting, others are. Ty isn't a biter, but we've had a few incident reports of him getting bitten. Ty just happens to be a pincher as of late, so I'm expecting an incident report soon that he pinched someone

BFP #3: 2/22/15 - MC: 3/3/15

We use an in home day care, but if she did incident reports there would probably be about 10 a day! Ashur is a maniac, and is always getting hurt.
I havent worked in day care, but I have worked in shelters and we had to fill out incident reports for every tiny thing. No matter if the kids were injured or not. If someone fell, there would be a report, even though kids fall all the time. I wouldnt go so much on how many reports there are, but on the severity of the injuries.

Wow, I'm so glad I asked. I didn't realize how common bites were. DS really doesn't hurt anyone but me...he likes to slap me in the face when he is angry.
But he's never hurt any other kids, so I guess I was starting to feel like he is being bullied. Maybe DS is just more easy-going then some of the other kids at day care.
I don't know if the bites were all from the same kid. If it happens again, I will ask more about that and what their policy is as far as suspensions, etc.
Thanks for the input!
