...not all at once.
DS has a bath and 8-oz bottle and goes to bed around 9:30 pm. He fusses just after midnight. Usually he'll put himself back to sleep, but sometimes DH or I will have to go in and hand him his kitty lovie or paci. He goes right back to sleep without an issue.
He starts stirring again at 6:30 am. Again, sometimes he goes back to sleep, and sometimes have to soothe him for just the briefest moment.
He wakes up at 7:30 and can't be soothed. He sees this as bottle time, and there's no convincing him otherwise. So he takes an 8-oz bottle and goes back to sleep till 10:30 or later.
He takes one nap around 3 pm, for 1-2.5 hrs, depending on his activity level that day and how well he slept the previous night. He is almost never grumpy. If he's tired, he will go straight down for a nap.
So yes, he is getting 13 hrs of sleep per night, for a total of the recommended 14+ hrs per 24-hr period. DH and I don't have a problem with it. It's been DS's routine for as long as I can remember.
He takes 28-32 oz of formula per day (all between 7:30 am and 9:30 pm), 2 big meals that includes all food groups, 1 smaller meal, and 1 snack.
This is fine, right? Since he's getting all the sleep he needs, is there any reason to push for 12 solid hours at night besides our own convenience and comfort? Or are we fostering bad sleep habits?
I've been trusting my own instincts on this one, but lately several people have made comments implying that the 12+ hrs only "counts" if it's all at once, and I guess it never hurts to ask.
