S/O: What does "NMS" mean to you?

I think this was talked about in the last few months but looking at the recent poll about answers it might be worth discussing again.

When you read NMS, what do you believe the poster is saying?

When you write NMS, what are you trying to convey?

Example:  I write it when I can't put my finger on the reason that I dislike the name.  There's a difference between not making my list and perfectly suitable for anyone else.  And then there's NMS.  It's usually in conjunction when there are names that I much prefer on their list.  I honestly wouldn't pass judgement on Gunnar's parents, but it doesn't do anything for me.  I don't like/love it and I don't hate it.  The only reaction it illicits from me is NMS.

When I read NMS, and I know the poster is usually pretty honest I infer that they probably mean something similar to what I mean.  If I don't know the poster/they have a low post count then I think they usually mean that they don't like the name but are being too nice.

I try to avoid saying NMS because I think most people think of it as a pushover answer when that's not how I mean it at all.

  • I see it as name your kid that if you want because I wouldn't think it was stupid but I am definitely not naming my kid that!

  • To me, NMS means I don't think the name is terrible, it's just not something I would personally use for whatever reason. Maybe I just don't like the sound of it, or it's just not the type of name I like. For example, maybe Jeffrey. It's a perfectly nice name, it's just not something I'd use. Nothing "wrong" with it though.

  • When I write "NMS," I mean that it's a perfectly legitimate, properly spelled name, but I just don't really like it or am just impartial to it. Perfect example: the name Tess. It's a cute name that I wouldn't judge any parent for giving to their child, but I've just never liked it for some reason. If I can explain why I don't like it, then I give a reason instead of just saying "NMS." For example, the name Kaylee. I can say I don't like it because it's too cutesy/doesn't age well IMO.

When I read "NMS," I assume that the poster is trying to convey a similar sentiment to what I mean when I put "NMS." I assume it's not a horrible name, but they just feel indifferent about it or aren't really sure why they don't like it.

  • I say nms when I don't really know why I don't like it. It is a name that I would not use or it fits a style/trend that I don't really care for.

When I read it in response to what I post I think the person either doesn't like it and doesn't want to explain why. I usually just filter out the nms post as they don't help much.

  • I use NMS to mean that I find the name perfectly useable but it is not on my long list and probably never will be.

I assume regular posters use it similarly but, like you said, there are some who use it just to be nice (I've probably been guilty of this too) about a name they hate.

  • I write NMS when it's a type of name that I am not into: unisex names and overly trendy names are two examples. If it's a horrendous spelling or a made up name, I usually try to be more specific on why I don't like the name.
  • I use NMS when it's something I wouldn't use myself for whatever reason but I don't hate it/see anything wrong with it, wouldn't mind it on someone else's child.

We all have our own name styles but just becuase your style isn't mine doesn't mean I hate it either.

For example, H and I adore the name Vanessa, but I doubt we'll ever use it as we have a tendency towards more classic old lady names. It's not for us, but it's still a great pick. Same with Tessa. We love it, but it's horrid with our last name, therefore NMS but still good.

  • When I don't think there is anything wrong with it, I just wouldn't use it for my children because I don't like it enough I use nms. If I genuinely dislike/hate a name I say so, I don't use nms.

  • Pretty much what everyone else said. When I use NMS I am saying, I wouldn't use it, but there's nothing wrong with it. I try to explain why usually, though.

When someone uses that with me, I assume they don't like the name for whatever reason. Usually I'm happy with just a yay or nay, so when people use NMS I take it as a "nay", and I'm good with that.

  • To me it means the person wouldn't use it themselves for some reason but they see it as a fine name.

Like the names John, Carl or Stella are all NMS.  They are all fine names but I personally wouldn't use them.

Now if someone puts a McKarty out there I'll say something different.

  • I say NMS when it's a perfectly good name that I would never side eye, but I don't particularly care for and can't really articulate why (Carson, and Autumn come to mind). I assume that's what most people mean when then say NMS too.

There are some names that are not my style in that I'd never use them, but still think they are good names and so I respond positively to them (most old man/old lady style names, such as Henry or Cora). If I can explain why I like or don't like a name, I always do so.

  • Not a bad name- just not the style or type of name I would use.

If I really dislike a name, I would say that.

  • Hmmm good point, maybe I should try being more to the point.

NMS when I use it means I don't like it but it is not really really bad.

I think I will try to stick with like, love, dislike, hate...that would make it a little more clear.

    I agree with the bold.

Sept 2013 started TTC#2 (never got PP period so hoping for the first egg to drop)
Jan 2014 - diagnosed POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and told pregnancy not possible without egg donor because my ovaries would never function again with my hormone levels (FSH 136, LH 98.6, AMH <.03, estradiol 0, HCG 7) - using acupuncture, chiropractic care and TCM herbs / supplements
March 11, 2014 ovulated despite every doctors prognosis!!!
Oct 2014 hormones (FSH 48, Estradiol 89, HCG 1) not good, but heckuva lot better!

  • Usually when I use NMS it is because I am indifferent to the name. It's a normal, okay name, it just doesn't do anything for me. Totally fine for someone else's kid.

Sometimes I use it when I am feeling lazy though for names that I don't like for a reason: occupational names, gag-worthy juvenile princess names for girls, boy names on girls, random surnames as FNs, etc but I just don't have the energy to type out why.

Or sometimes I'll use NMS for an above name to be nice if it seems like there is a pile on of negative responses.  Sometimes I'm not sure if one more "I hate that name" is really helpful, or will just put the OP over the edge hormonally, kwim?

Just an "eh" name to me. Not something I would use but not a "bad" name.

    This exactly.

  • Usually when I use NMS it is because I genuinely just do not like the name he/she has picked. It's kind of a nice way of saying yeah sure. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings and sometimes that is just the nicest phrase I can use.

That's how I would interpret it if someone posted it on one of my threads. I don't pass judgement on anyone for his/her names just want to be completely honest when giving my opinion.

  • Yeah, for me it's a name I wouldn't get mad at the parents for choosing (like "how could you name your child that and claim to love them?") but it's one I would never pick for my own kid. I'm pretty picky with names so this comes up often and I just hope I don't offend anyone.
