Natural Birth

Baby is breech--help!

Need some words of encouragement.  I had a wonderful natural birth experience the first time around even though my daughter was four weeks early.  Now I am 34 weeks pregnant and the baby is breech.  My care providers are midwives, so I am pretty sure they will try a version if he is still breech at 36 weeks, but I am nervous.  I know it doesn't always work.  I don't want a c-section!  I've never envisioned myself having one and am now really freaked out by it.  Help!

Re: Baby is breech--help!

  • Try all the spinning babies techniques you can.  Also swimming can help relax your belly and reposition the baby b/c they and you and a little more nimble.  Plus, drink lots and lots of water.  Getting your fluid levels up a little helps with the spinning baby movements.  If you think you got the baby to spin into head-down, then you can go for like a 2-mile walk to try and set the baby in position.

Lastly, if the baby hasn't turned.  Prior to a version, talk with an OB who will do breech births.  I know one in Colorado and some midwives in Idaho that do those, but I bet they would know someone if you're not in that area.  They might deem you a good candidate and honestly, as a second time mom, you probably are.  I had my second breech (surprise) and it wasn't nearly as much work as the first.

    Good luck.

  • A few years ago, there was a proper double-blind western-style study done on acupressure points for breech babies.  They turned the baby 75% of the time (a manual version is only successful 60% of the time).  Do the spinningbabies stuff and find an acupuncturist who specializes in women's health.
  • Here are a few things that I know that can turn a breech baby. I would start all of them ASAP until that baby turns. Find a chiropractor who does the Webster or Bagnell Technique for pregnant women. Both are methods for turning breech babies. Also, a few other things to try rub peppermint on your belly (just a couple of drops, buy at whole foods or store similar to, get a good quality one) then get on your hands and knees and crawl around for 15 minutes, a couple times a day. And you can try moxibustion (spelling) you can get this from online or from an acupuncturist. You can google it, but it has helped to turn babies too. Drink lots of water, and calm down, relax that will help the baby! Good luck!
  • I did a lot of things to turn my breech DD because I really didn't want a C-section. Among the things I tried: acupuncture with moxibustion; Webster technique with chiropractor; spinning babies; hanging upside down from my couch (I realize this sounds unsafe but this technique was suggested by my midwife); placing cold packs on the area where DD's head was and hot packs on the place where I wanted DD's head to be; visualizing DD turning. I would have been open to trying a version or a breech vaginal birth but the OB who oversees my midwife wouldn't attempt either due to DD's position (one leg up, one leg down). Anyway, DD turned at 39 weeks 2 days. I went into labor the next day and DD was born at 39 weeks 4 days -- proof that babies can turn even at the last minute! Be proactive and don't lose hope! Good luck.

  • Relax... and do the things that other people recommended. Just keep in mind that some babies will just decide to flip when they are ready to come out, so it may happen at 40 weeks or a little past that. There is no reason to have a c-section with a breech baby until you are past your EDD, and by that I mean at 41 weeks. Depending on the type of midwives you are using, they may or may not have experience delivering breech babies. I would talk to them and see if they have in order to ease your fears. Breech births are possible, you just have to deliver on your hands and knees normally... you may find a birth tub to be relaxing and helpful during a breech birth. I hope you can get that baby turned, but if not, realize it is not the end of the world and you can still have a natural birth... it will just take a bit more effort and time. Good luck!
  • Acupuncture can flip a breech baby. Crazy but true! One little point on your pinky toe is all it takes.
