How do I sterilize thermometer?

I took ds's temp and he pooped all over the thermometer (and my hand). How do I sterilize the thermometer. It is a digital one. Can I use soap and water?

I wouldn't use water on a digital thermometer.

the instructions for sterilizing mine say to immerse it fully in alcohol for 10 minutes( i think 10). I think I would do that if I took his temp rectally if the other ways I would wash it with hotwater and then wipe it down with rubbing alcohol
