Day Care Costs?

Hey! DH and I had the baby talk (again) today, and he agreed that we could start TTC in 2 years (the amount of time he thinks it will take us to save up and buy a home). I am trying to figure out how much I think our baby will cost us a month once we have him/her. I have no experience with Day Cares, obviously, as this will be my first child. Both DH and I work full time and we won't be able to afford for me to be a stay-at-home mom. We live in the Jefferson City, MO area and I was wondering if anyone knew of good day cares and how much they cost per month. They have to accept newborns at 3months (I'll take 12 weeks of maternity leave).

Thanks for any help you can provide me. I can't wait to start our family and want to be prepared financially to give our child everything I can. Smile

It might be helpful to ask this on the baby or toddler boards since everyone there has children. Not everyone here necessarily does. Good luck! =-)

Your best bet is to find some local daycares and price them out and then assume prices will rise a little in a couple years. Price out centers an in home places. For the sake of argument, exclude any that come in far below the others. Better to assume high and hope for lower. Home daycares will typically be less expensive than centers but don't write them off. The right one can be amazing. GL

Ask on your local board or working Moms board. For infant care at my center is 280 and that is cheap for my area. It varies from area to area.

I just went day care hunting today. Our city is a small town/ lower income type place.

I found a state-ran place that charges 4 bucks an hour. It was dirty, and the baby room was about the size of my living room. I liked the ladies, but there were some scary old cribs and toys.

The place I chose is 125 a week, but the schedule is baby-led, theres a sunroom they spend time in, and no cribs unless they are asleep. Also- baby massages at play time. Im a happy mama.

Its expensive to get the good stuff.

It's strongly related to region of the country and in-home vs. center. Ballpark for my region is $1500-1800/month. Terrifying IMO.

it's pricey out here.

$310 per WEEK for 6w - 2years.

$230 per WEEK for 2+

(note that I have kids in both price categories)

this is at a learning center and they have many frequent, fun activities like a bouncer, or a petting zoo, or build-a-bear comes one day every July.

It is around 20k/year where I live, but I am in on of the more higher cost of living urban areas in the US. Right now we are thinking a nanny share might be our best bet
