Please help calm me down...

I just returned from my first ultra sound (6 weeks) and found out that I am having twins.  I have a 2 year old son.  Twins don't run in my family and I honestly never even thought about having twins.  I am freaking out.

For those of you who had one and then had twins, what should I expect?  I feel like this is going to be monumentally life-changing and I am SO SCARED.  I don't know if I can do it.

 Please help.

  • Oh it definitely takes some time for the news to sink in! Our twins are a result of fertility treatments and two embryos were transferred back into my body so I KNEW I could have twins, and yet the news was still shocking. I actually cried when we first found out, and I have to be honest, it wasn't tears of joy... I just felt totally overwhelmed (our DS was 14 months old when I got pregnant again). Now, at nearly 26 weeks along, the news has totally sunk in and I am totally excited to meet these two little ones in November. It's going to be a challenge for sure (my DS will be 22 months when the twins are born), but it may help that you are not a FTM (first time mom) and having a newborn in the house won't be a totally foreign concept to you. Definitely visit this board often as it's come a valuable resource to me during this pregnancy. Welcome and congrats on your twins!

  • My son is 12 ! I'm 42 and wasn't even trying to get pregnant! I was shocked when I found out! My twin pregancy was uneventful except placenta previs early in my pregnancy resolved itself but what always got me through it all and still does is that I believe that you are never given more than you can handle! Reading posts on this board helped a lot and still does! You will be fine! Just take it one day at a time! Before you know it you will be holding those precious little miracles in your arms! Us MoMs are so blessed! EVERYONE doesn't get 2 at one time! GL! Sorry for typos! On my phone!

  • I also want to add that I'm a single mother! Their dad freaked out when I told him that I was having twins! I'm doing it alone and its hard but so rewarding!

  • It took me the better part of my pregnancy to get used to the idea.  I never wanted more than 2 kids.  I couldn't imagine it any other way now, but I was a mess at the time.

I knew 2 things when I found out.  First, we needed a new car (a minivan - which, BTW, is awesome!  Automatic sliding doors are nothing short of a miracle).  Second, we needed new [cheaper] day care.

Welcome to the board!  The women here are full of great resources and support.

  • I know exactly how you feel, I burst into tears during my first ultrasound when she pointed out the two babies, and they were NOT tears of joy. I was completely freaked out. My son was only 16 months at the time, he was 22 months when they were born.

It is life changing, but in the best possible way. I look at my two little babies now, who I never imagined having, and I can't imagine life without them!

I think it's really fortunate that you found out so early b/c you have lots of time to get used to the idea. And the fact that you have a child already and are not too far removed from the newborn baby experience, will pay off in volumes. Even though there wer two to contend with, DH and I felt like pros this time around!

  • We've ALL been there. We weren't planning on having another baby until our youngest DD (now 15m) was 3. DH was across the country when I found out it was twins and boy I was shocked! I hyperventilated for about an hour. What's funny is that I told ALL of my friends that it was twins well before we knew. I just had a feeling, and even when they confirmed it I was completely shocked. I don't think I really got EXCITED for at least 4m. It's higher risk and I just didn't know how to feel. Now that we're more than halfway there, I am beyond excited - two babies at once! It's going to be an experience, but when you have kids, every day is a new normal. So we have two instead of one. If I'm nursing one, I might as well be nursing two. If I'm up with one, I might as well be up with two. Somehow the anxiety is just gone and it's been replaced with total giddiness. The number of people who say, "Oh, I always wanted twins!" tells me that this is very, very, very special.

  • Thank you!  All of your comments did help.  I really appreciate it.

Please, tell us more. Nobody has ever made that comment. Ever.

To the OP, my twins are my only children but they were a shock. Honestly, I think I shut down as to the logistics of it all and just focused on the silly things like nursery bedding. I still  look at mine and think "what? TWO babies?"

I have a few MoM friends who are 1 + twins and they all say that they are so glad their twins aren't their first. If you have one child, you know that the learning curve is steep. You will go into this with the confidence knowing that it's all about stages and that nothing lasts forever.

  • I am right there with you.... I have four children already and was done when I went in and the told me at 8 weeks I cried and could not believe it. I freaked out and had no idea what we were going to do... I am now 29 weeks and it's only been about two months that I have came to accept it... Now I am supper happy and can't wait to meet my boys... Just take it one day at a time it will get better.
  • I freaked out too!   I was not expecting to see 2.  It took me about a month of solid freaking out and then one day it was like a switch went off and then I felt happiness.  I do still sometimes have moments of panis (3 under 2.5 - eeep).... but in the end it will all work out because, well, it has to!  Good luck and welcome!

agree.  We found out 3 weeks ago about the twins and I'm still shocked.  Our boys are 2 and 4.  They don't run in my family either but now they do. :)

I've already had people tell me they wanted twins.  I never even thought about it but now think it is special esp. since we have already had our boys one at a time.

    congrats!

  • I think I went through every emotion imaginable the first 24 hours. Ours were spontaneous and we were not expecting two at all!   I also went through a phase of feeling guilty since my son was 19 months old and I knew it would be hard on him.  My girls were born when he was 26 months and he loves them more than anything in the world(he does have his moments where he says "put the sister down" too)!

I was terrified because my husband travels--A LOT!  It was tough when he started traveling again but we pushed through and now things have become routine.  I also keep a pretty strict schedule for the girls.

It is super special and it is hard too, but it will become your new normal.  Good luck!

  • Definitely lots of emotions!

Ours were a complete surprise. We found out at 11 weeks.  The best advice I can give is to hang out on this board. I would have been lost without it. It helped to read what others were going through and now especially to ask questions now that they are here.

I always get the "twins? you are so lucky!" comments.  Yes, we are very lucky and blessed, but I don't think lucky to them means the same as it does to me :)

  • I could've written this!  Today I found out at my 6 week ultrasound that I'm carrying twins.  I have a two year old daughter.  My husband is being the calm rational one.  I'm shaking . . . still . . . three hours later.  I can't even imagine how this is going to work, but I'm using every bone in my body to stay rational.  I think way too far into the future (how are we going to pay for college, can we get twins into our day care with the huge waitlist that they have, will my mom come live with me).

I'll be hanging out on this board . . . please share your wisdom!

    So helpful. lol.

I was in the exact same situation. It was a big shock and I'll never forget that feeling.

You're right, it will be life-changing. BUT, you will figure it out and I guarantee that one day you'll look at your precious kids and realize that things turned out just the way they were supposed to.

It's okay not to be really excited right now, let yourself feel what you're feeling and take one day at a time.
