Babies: 9 - 12 Months

almost 10 month old lost weight

I took my daughter for her 9 month check up today, she will be 10 months in 3 days and she only weighs 13.8 lbs about a month ago she was at 14 lbs so the doctor was concerned about her weight loss and wants us to start supplementing one of her bottles with pediasure to see if its a calorie thing or something else. She drinks about 16 to 18 oz a day plus a jar of baby food for breakfest and a jar at dinner.  She has some type of fruit or veggie for lunch and we are starting to give her more of our food for her meals, the doctor now wants her on a high carb diet.  Has this happened to anyone of you? If so did the pediasure work? She isn't the type of baby to cry when she is hungry so we have to just offer her bottles throughout the day!

  • When DD was in daycare, there was a toddler that had to drink pedisure, but I'm not sure why. She was really small, height/weight. They ended up having to use a feeding tube. Not trying to scare you, that's just my only experience. I'm sure she had some other health problems as well.

  • 18 oz is low, the recommendation for the low end is 24 oz.  Unfortunately, our dd never drinks more than 20 oz anymore.  She loves real food, and even when I take that away she will not drink more than 20oz in a day.  She used to eat around 35 oz a day on a regular basis.  The pedi so far isn't concerned since we've seen gains when she goes in, just not any big gains.  I'm interested to see at her 9mo appointment in a few weeks what she's gained since she was in for a sick visit a couple weeks ago.  I don't think it will be much.  Nothing we can do but wait and see.

  • DD started losing weight at 9 months as well, and her percentiles have been dropping weight wise since 4 months.  She still BF 7-8 times a day, in addition to three solid meals and a snack (she is a huge eater).  At 10.5 months she was put on pediasure in addition to try to get her weight to stabilize, which it has.  The pediatrician is pretty sure it is just a bad combo of a high metabolism and high activity level in our case.

  • 16-18 ounces is really low to me. DS eats that just at daycare.

  • Jarred fruits and veggies have few calories. I would start adding olive oil to all her pures. Also offer high calorie things like dark meat chicken and egg yolk and full fat yogurt. Maybe you should ask to see a Dietician.... But either way at her age you should be offering her a lot more than fruit and veg pures those are like beginner foods for a six month old.

  • My DD1 was on a special formula from Nestle I think when she was a year or so old.  It was like medical grade carnation instant breakfast.  DD1 was about 18 pounds at a year.  My doctor was never really concerned about her weight but just wanted to see a corresponding weight gain with amped up calorie intake.  DD2 was born at 91/2 pounds but dropped in percentiles in the first few months and is now following in her sister's footsteps.  Some babies just don't have huge hunger cues.  I do agree the formula intake seems low and if she won't take any more than that, then you need to make every drink and bite count by adding calories.  If you make your own purees, you can use formula to liquify it.  I would serve full fat greek yogurt with fruits or veggies.  I like the olive oil idea.  And you can add an extra scoop of formula but I would run that past your pedi.

  • I would also start offering more finger/table foods rather than just purees.  DS has about 21 oz of formula a day, which is a huge cut down from just six weeks ago.  But he eats three meals a day plus a snack and I'm always surprised at what he can pack away.  Have you tried giving her things like egg yolk and avocado?
  • Thanks for all the replys she does eat some table food but we have started giving her more, sadly we need to change the way we eat cause I get off of work late and sometimes fast food is what we have for dinner and I don't want her having it. I haven't tried eggs yet but am doing that tomorrow! We started a few ounces of pediasure and I am making sure she ups her ounces! I think she is just a small eater but I want to make sure we are doing what we can for her!
