Speech Eval. ?

Have any of the mamas of girls taken their LO to get evaluated?

DD still is not talking much but I think she is just being stubborn. I could be wrong, but the doctor didn't seem to worried at her 18 month appointment. He just told me if I decided to get her evaluated that I needed to do it before she turned 2. DH also thinks she is just being stubborn but my MIL won't shut up about her not talking. She tries to evaluate my kid sometimes I think because she goes and does home visits with kids that do learn slow and just plays with them. She has done this crap to a couple of people (not speech but about the way the kid walks) I know so they get worried and take their kid to the doctor and they tell them nothing is wrong!

So DH and I were talking last night and I think I am going to try and take her in. I have a call into the pedi just waiting for a call back because he said something about needing a referral . The pedi said it's free so we figured we would just take her because it couldn't hurt anything. We are NOT telling my MIL though because I don't want to be bothered with her questions.

Sorry this kinda turned into a vent.

  • My thoughts are that if you are worried, then call. If they tell you, you're crazy, then fine, at least you tried. I don't *think* you have to have a referral from a pedi, but I could be wrong on that too.

Also, you don't have to have it done before 2. My 3 year old cousin got an evaluation last month.

Good luck - and let us know how it goes! I think quite a few of us have been through it so we unfortunately have experience =)

  • If you would like to have your LO evaluated then do it.  Not sure why you would need a referral.  Good luck!

  • I'm not sure either but they just called back and said it was sent to the referral department and I should be hearing back soon. I know it's done by the hospital so maybe that is why I have to have a referral.

  • My son doesn't talk much either.  He pretty much just makes animal sounds and points and grunts.  Haha.  I've read that sometimes kids who are more energetic don't speak as much because they put all their energy into body mechanics. Also, I think my son doesn't speak much because he gets what he wants when he grunts anyway. If you want to get her checked out, then you should but I think your MIL is just causing you unneccesary stress. If your dr told you not to worry, then try not to worry.

I know this is childish but one reason I want to take her is so I can throw it in her face if nothing is wrong. I shouldn't think that because then something will be wrong but that's is how I feel. If something is wrong I don't want to tell her but if nothing is I want to be all "in you face"!!!

  • I'm going to call for an EI evaluation for speech for LO.  My sister watched him the other day and said he imitates a lot, but doesn't have much "spontaneous speech" and it couldn't hurt to have him evaluated.  (She's in her last semester of grad school for speech pathology.)

Ya know, I totally agree with you on this.  You say she stresses other people out & is always WRONG.  You absolutely should throw it in her face & tell her to shut her dang mouth from here on out!!!
  • If it would give you peace of mind, then go for it. I'm always in the camp of more knowledge is better.

  • Hey... I'm a speech pathologist I think a few December moms are. If its through the hospital, depending on insurance you do need a referral.
If LO is following directions and imitating and has a few spontaneous words I would not be overly concerned. If unable to follow sime directions or imitate, I would be concerned. All babies develop and different rates, but by now they should be able to understand quite a bit if language even if they are not using it.
Either way...Can't hurt to get the eval to put your mind at ease.
  • Also, once she is preschool age you can get free evaluation and services through the public school district if needed.

This makes me feel better. She does follow direction, well as much as a 20 month old will, lol.

    Examples:

Can mom see her phone? She will go look for it and get it. She will also do the same with the remote or her shoes.

Are you stinky? She will hold her nose and go get a diaper.

Wanna give the dogs a treat or feed the dogs? She will go get their bowls to feed them or go to the treats to give them a treat.

She will got throw something away if I tell her to.

If we tell her to say something she looks at us like duh I know that word but I'm not going to say it!

My guess is she's fine and within a few months you will see a language explosion. All of a sudden she will start talking a lot more. Just make sure you give her the opportunity. Label things she's interested in.. Ask her questions... Don't just anticipate her needs... Let her ask for things. If she points then label for her... Etc.

  • She sounds a lot like my daughter. She has fully understood anything we say for a very long time now. Will listen and respond properly to anything we say. She just doesn't seem super interesting in talking much. Lots of simple stuff "hi, mom, dad, sam, kitty, fish..." Not all perfectly pronounced but certainly words. Still lots of playful babble. At times I get a bit worried but I think over all like someone else said one day we will wake up and they just won't stop talking ; ) Good luck!
