Have any of the mamas of girls taken their LO to get evaluated?
DD still is not talking much but I think she is just being stubborn. I could be wrong, but the doctor didn't seem to worried at her 18 month appointment. He just told me if I decided to get her evaluated that I needed to do it before she turned 2. DH also thinks she is just being stubborn but my MIL won't shut up about her not talking. She tries to evaluate my kid sometimes I think because she goes and does home visits with kids that do learn slow and just plays with them. She has done this crap to a couple of people (not speech but about the way the kid walks) I know so they get worried and take their kid to the doctor and they tell them nothing is wrong!
So DH and I were talking last night and I think I am going to try and take her in. I have a call into the pedi just waiting for a call back because he said something about needing a referral . The pedi said it's free so we figured we would just take her because it couldn't hurt anything. We are NOT telling my MIL though because I don't want to be bothered with her questions.
Sorry this kinda turned into a vent.
Re: Speech Eval. ?
My thoughts are that if you are worried, then call. If they tell you, you're crazy, then fine, at least you tried. I don't *think* you have to have a referral from a pedi, but I could be wrong on that too.
Also, you don't have to have it done before 2. My 3 year old cousin got an evaluation last month.
Good luck - and let us know how it goes! I think quite a few of us have been through it so we unfortunately have experience
My little man at 0-1-2
I know this is childish but one reason I want to take her is so I can throw it in her face if nothing is wrong. I shouldn't think that because then something will be wrong but that's is how I feel. If something is wrong I don't want to tell her but if nothing is I want to be all "in you face"!!!
I'm going to call for an EI evaluation for speech for LO. My sister watched him the other day and said he imitates a lot, but doesn't have much "spontaneous speech" and it couldn't hurt to have him evaluated. (She's in her last semester of grad school for speech pathology.)
If LO is following directions and imitating and has a few spontaneous words I would not be overly concerned. If unable to follow sime directions or imitate, I would be concerned. All babies develop and different rates, but by now they should be able to understand quite a bit if language even if they are not using it.
Either way...Can't hurt to get the eval to put your mind at ease.
This makes me feel better. She does follow direction, well as much as a 20 month old will, lol.
Examples:
Can mom see her phone? She will go look for it and get it. She will also do the same with the remote or her shoes.
Are you stinky? She will hold her nose and go get a diaper.
Wanna give the dogs a treat or feed the dogs? She will go get their bowls to feed them or go to the treats to give them a treat.
She will got throw something away if I tell her to.
If we tell her to say something she looks at us like duh I know that word but I'm not going to say it!
My guess is she's fine and within a few months you will see a language explosion. All of a sudden she will start talking a lot more. Just make sure you give her the opportunity. Label things she's interested in.. Ask her questions... Don't just anticipate her needs... Let her ask for things. If she points then label for her... Etc.
Awesome! Thank you so much for the advice
