Third Trimester in College...

Anyone else pregnant and in college?
I've been stressing a little about it. The upcoming semester starts on Monday and I'll be in my 27th week. Decided to email all my teachers weeks ago to make them all aware of what is going on and that I'll be giving birth at the end of November. Everyone seems cool with it except one. Their reply to my email made me unsure. However, I know two people for sure who are taking that class and will work with me to keep me caught up at the end before finals since I will NOT be there.
Basically just curious if anyone else is going through similar stuff.
I'm 25, having our first child, and in college. Ugh! Confused

Re: Third Trimester in College...

  • I was going to enroll this semester so I could hurriedly finish before baby gets here, but I'm due November 29th and finals start December 3rd. I figured this wouldn't be a good combination, coupled with the fact that I don't like the idea of my water breaking/going into labor on campus.. so I opted out until next semester. Kudos to you for continuing though. Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies.
I thought about not going this semester mainly because I'm already getting big and uncomfortable. That and I too have a fear of my water breaking on campus. I'm taking ceramics and will be working on the wheel. Pretty exciting stuff, but I'm so worried that my water will break and flood the ceramics room. I know it's not a realistic thought, but it is one I just can't seem to get out of my head.
One good thing about me continuing with the semester is that my college is only about 5-10 mins from the hospital and my doctor's office. Which is closer than where I live. The idea of spending my week days so close makes me feel a little better. Also, it's one less semester I'll have to make up later. Next semester (after she is here) I'm doing it part time, online. This semester is full time and on campus.

Tuesday after my appointment, I went on campus for books and got looks from other students. It has begun and classes haven't even started yet. Lol.

  • Yep I'm doing this too. I am in the nursing program, so I have clinicals and community projects this semester should be interesting. Our finals are Dec. 3rd. I have already set up for help asking my mom and mil to come and plan at least one week with me so that I can at least attend class. My clinicals will be complete by the time I'm due (Nov. 20th). Hopefully this baby doesn't decide to come early. Good luck if you need any support we're all here for you. I was in school with #1 as well.

  • I will be.  I am 31 and due Nov. 15th.  My classes also start next week. I am only taking 2 classes = 6credits just to make sure I can stay on top of things. I also didn't take any classes on campus.  I am not going to lie,I am a bit nervous about making it all work.  I will also have a preschooler running around.

I'm sure your professor will help you take the precautions you need to, but I just wanted to chime in and say to make sure that any glazes you use are safe for a pregnant woman to use. :)  I took a few pottery sessions, and my instructor said that when I decided pregnant, I would need to be mindful of that since some contain lead, etc. (unfortunately, I've moved away from the studio though, boo).  It's a blast and very relaxing after you get the hang of it, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it. :)

I'm working on my second graduate degree right now, but I'm not in a huge hurry with it, so I decided just to take the semester off.  I had enough problems trying to focus on the classes I was taking this summer.  I'll go back in the spring.

I'm in my last year of law school.  The dean of students is having me meet with him because they offer some help for pregnant students.  Title VII of the Civil Rights Act provides that, since pregnancy is a "temporary disability", the school must give you all the benefits they would give any temporarily disabled students.

For me, that includes a notetaker, temporary rescheduling of exams, etc.  I'd look into what your school offers.

This is good advice. Definitely talk to your professors in person, and possibly your dept. chair or the dean if need be.

I'll be starting my 3rd year of a super intense master's program next Monday. I'm only taking 2 classes this semester but I know it's still going to be a challenge. If I was going full time I'd be doing a 40+ hr/week externship on top of the 2 classes this semester (and next), so I'm definitely giving myself a break compared to the rest of my classmates but not taking any time off. I'm not sure what will happen when the baby comes but I'll try to work out alternate arrangements and deal with what I need to do the best that I can. Good luck!

  • Wow, kudos to all of you ladies who are taking classes this semester.  I am taking both fall and winter semesters off for baby.  I am done this summer semester next Friday and I cannot WAIT to be done.  Good luck to you all!

  • I am also going to school. I was signed for all my classes, emailed all my profs about my baby girl coming and when (nov 14th she is due), and i got all emails back saying that they would work for me. although, right now i am put on bed rest for a while due to cervical funneling. so, there is a possibility of taking online courses. maybe that could be a good idea for you too if you feel uncomfortable at school; just be comfortable in your jammies at home :) good luck to all ! :)
  • kudos to all of you that are doing school right now. I was supposed to start my masters program this august but since I have to pay everything out of pocket it wasnt going to work out, with the medical bills and all the baby needs :( i hope to go back next fall, but good luck to you all!

  • Can you take fewer credits this fall?

I'm in grad school and will be taking a reduced load this fall so that I don't get overwhelmed and so I can keep up with my fabulous 8-10 hours of sleep/night schedule and keep the stress under control.

my only advice is to talk to the teachers right up front and make arrangements for the end of the trimester-- either to take finals or turn in papers early (my plan), or to make them up later.  Sounds like you've already started this.
