Natural Birth

WWYD - Switching OBs for Planned Hypnobirth?

I just finished a 5-week hypnobirthing course and ended up hiring the instructor as my doula =)  She's great and I feel very comfortable that she'll really be able to help relax me during labor.  I am currently with two OBs who I like, but don't love - they are supportive of my natural birth plan so far.  There are a few things I'm not happy with - if my docs are not on call, I'll get some random OB at my birth.  And my docs want to monitor me 20 minutes out of every hour - I'm a little nervous that will be too disruptive if I'm walking the halls or in the shower or birth ball.  Sooooo.....  one of the hypnobirth instructors is an OB and I am considering switching.  She delivers all of her natural birth patients.  My only hesitation is that I'm 32 weeks already - is it too late to switch?  I feel like having a doc who I know is 100% on board will only further support me.....

Thoughts?  Thanks ladies!!

  • It's not too late to switch until you're headed to the hospital to have a baby!  I would check with the practice you're interested in switching to just to make sure there's no problem with getting your records transferred in time or anything like that (which I can't imagine would be a problem!) and then go for it.  IMO who your care provider is is so important to the process.  If you're not happy and want to switch, by all means do it!

  • I would switch.  Heck, I just switched caregivers at 33 weeks and have no issues.  You see your OB for almost the same number of appts from 32 weeks to delivery as from 8 weeks to 30 since the appts are closer together at the end, so you should know the new OB well by the time you deliver.

    Good luck.
