Pregnant with asthma

Hi, this is my first pregnancy and im new to it all! I am 10 weeks 2 days and I have found that my asthma has gotten worse in the past few weeks. Anyone else experience this? And any tips on how to keep it under control? My dr said my inhaler is safe to use, but I am using it so much- at least 2x a day.

Re: Pregnant with asthma

  • Try to avoid things that aggravate your asthma, obviously. I also had a friend who was pregnant and she had severe asthma. She had serious concerns that the inhaler was going to harm her baby, but her doctor told her that a lack of oxygen was worse for a baby than the inhaler she was on. Ask if there are any safer options that you might be able to switch to, but otherwise, I would trust your doctor.

I was told some women have their asthma get worse, some have it get better, some have no changes. Mine got worse, lucky me. I'm on more medication than usual this summer - I called MotherRisk at Sick Kids hospital here in Toronto, and they were able to reassure me that the medications weren't at all harmful. Maybe you need to go onto a preventative medication? Or take an antihistamine if allergies are the trigger (there's a lot that are safe, do you have an asthma/allergies doctor to talk to? Uncontrolled asthma isn't good in pregnancy, is it a rescue inhaler you're taking every day?)

  • I am allergic to just about everything! I don't have an allergy dr anymore but that is a good idea to get one. Yes, I have a rescue inhaler now. I used to take Advair for prevention, but it stopped working after about a year. They upped the dosage and that worked a little but not very well. I probably should go see a specialist though.

    Thanks!

I`m on Advair and Singulair, and I take Claritin (well, generic lotoradine) for allergies. It`s been a nasty summer for me don`t know if it`s pollen levels or pregnancy or both. That`s just what I`ve been prescribed though - and I`ll probably drop the Claritin and possibly wean down on the Advair the fall.

If you can see a specialist, I`d do it, esp. if your family doc isn`t really good with asthma. And I think MotherRisk takes calls from the US, they were very helpful giving me information about studies on my medication (Singulair in particular, my doc told me to call them, and it eased my mind a lot).

  • Mine also got worse,  i am currently 20 weeks pregnant and last week i had an asthma exacerbation. I was hospitalized were i received steroids and was sent home with inhaled corticosteroids and put on brethine. Please elaborate more on you experience it would really ease my mind.
  • I recently found out that acidic foods that cause indigestion trigger asthma. My asthma / allergy doc said that I could have an increase in symptoms due to that. I have mild asthma but have noticed I feel it when I eat certain foods. Maybe that could help you? I hope it gets better!
