CF rates?

Hi ladies! So I received some news from the genetic counselor today... apparently she said that I am a carrier of CF. She stated that a good majority of white women are actually carriers.... so I was wondering if any of you received this news? I know the next step is having DH to give blood and we could have nothing to worry about, but it's just such a shock... Thanks ladies!

  • This page should have the correct information to answer your question.

    https://www.cff.org/AboutCF/Testing/

    In a nutshell it says this about genetic testing:

    Genetic Carrier Testing ? More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. This blood test can help detect carriers, who could pass CF onto their children. To have cystic fibrosis, a child must inherit one copy of the defective CF gene from each parent.

    Each time two carriers of the CF gene have a child, the chances are:

    • 25% (1 in 4) the child will have CF;
    • 50% (1 in 2) the child will carry the CF gene but not have CF; and
    • 25% (1 in 4) the child will not carry the gene and not have CF

  • I found out when I was pregnant with my son that I am a carrier of CF. Luckily DH is not so we didn't have any sort of issue. Just a tip...stay away from Dr. Google! It will only scare you and there is no reason to worry until you have your DH's results back.
