TTC after 35

Folic Acid

Hi friends! I'm wondering what you are taking right now regarding prenatal/folic acid.

My sister and I both visit the same practice, but see different OBs. I am 36, sis is 34.  Her doc has her taking prenaplus prenatal vitamins, and prescribed additional folic acid.  My doc just has me taking the prenaplus.  I feel like we have similar health histories and we're both around the magic 35 number.  I trust my doc, but I just wonder what others in this same age group are doing.  TIA

Re: Folic Acid

  • I just take an extra folic acid pill and Vitamin D (which is unrelated to ttc, but I recently had several large fibroids removed and studies have shown taking Vitamin D *might* help prevent them, whatever works, right?)

I  eat pretty well overall so I don't feel like I need to take a prenatal until I actually get pregnant. But that's just personal opinion and I'm not a health professional.

EDIT: oops! I see you're pregnant. I thought for some reason you were ttc. When I was pregnant in Nov, I was taking an over-the-counter prenatal - I forget the brand but it was a whole-foods based vitamin I got at a health food store. No extra folic acid on top of that, but my ob/gyn did recommend Omega 3s in addition to the prenatal.

  • I take Nature Made prenatal multivitamin plus DHA, which contains 800mcg of folic acid. There is a minimum recommended dose of folic acid, which is 400mcg daily, for women of childbearing age. Most sources now recommend 400-800mcg daily if you're TTC or pregnant; and they recommend you start a year in advance for best preventative results.

  • Actually not pregnant, I just haven't changed my ticker! I have a 5 month old but we plan to TTC after his first birthday and want to be sure I'm doing everything possible to prevent future problems.
  • My doc put me on folic acid when I told her we were considering ttc soon.  She said the new thought was that it was helpful to take before pregnancy, as well as through early pregnancy to prevent neural defects.

You doc may have read different studies.  I would ask about it.  Say you are curious about why your sister is on it, but you aren't (since this is what brought it up, right?).

  • We are TTC #3 after being on B/C for 13 1/2 years. My doctor put me on CitraNatal and 4mg of Folic Acid. The Folic Acid is to help prevent neurological defects. I would talk to your doctor.
