Excessive swelling in feet and hands

Hey girls.

The last week or 2 I have started having WAY more swelling in my feet and hands.  I already have carpal tunnel in my right hand, got that about 4 weeks ago.  I wear a brace for that.  Before, my feet would swell around 4pm, I'd go home, put them up and they would go down. (I work in sales so I'm constantly on them.)  But now they are swollen quicker, like around 11am, and they are not going down to my normal size.  They hurt so bad.  I was really hoping to not go on bedrest!!!  I'm drinking a ton of water and trying to watch my salt intake.  Any other suggestions to kick the swelling or am I just doomed until giving birth???

Thanks.

Re: Excessive swelling in feet and hands

  • I don't know from experience if this would work, but could you try icing them when you put them up?

  • TED hose for the feet. And make sure you get your BP checked regularly-- when I started really swelling in week 34, my BP spiked and it was pre-e.

  • Call your Dr and get your BP checked asap.  As pp said, it could be a sign of pre-e.

While at the dr, ask for a prescription for support hose / compression hose.  They were a life saver for me.  I went to a medical supply store to get fitted properly and insurance covered the cost.  I got 2 pairs and each pair was around $100!!  Expensive, but worth every penny once I started wearing them.  Put them on first thing in the morning and wear them until bedtime.  You won't believe how much better you feel.  The socks are ugly, but I felt like dancing in the street less than 24 hours later.

  • I agree, get your BP checked ASAP.  By the time I had excessive swelling, I was about 32 weeks and going to my doctor every week.  He had me come in two more times each week just to have my BP checked.  I just stopped in on my way home from work 2 days a week and then had an appointment another day.  I never developed pre-e but my doctor was definitely concerned because I was crazy swollen!

  • I hear ya. Its awful! I would put my hands in ice water in the mornings before work. It was horrible but did help. My doctor told me there is nothing I can do except drink a ton of water and keep my feet up. Hang in there!
