STMs - Video Monitors

This is something I didn't have with DD and I think I want with baby #2. What is your feedback on them and which one do you recommend??

Re: STMs - Video Monitors

  • I don't know how true it is but I read an article the other day about people being about to park outside your house (or be in their homes around you) and pick up the same signal you are using. Like when you have a regular moniter and can pick up the neighbours kid or phone convo.
The whole article was about them being unsafe because as they become more popular people are using them as a window into your home! They can see your kids sleeping and/or watch you breastfeeding LO! Indifferent
Again, I don't know how easy it would be or anything but I do know that with technology now a days anything is possible and I don't know if I could trust having an open camera into my home! Especially focused onto my child. People are sick.

Just something to think about/ be aware of, I guess.
I really wish I could find the link..

  • I have a Summer Infant one that has worked well for the past year. I love that I can easily see DD if she's not going to sleep and know whether or not going into her room would wake her up more or help her fall asleep faster. It has two channels so I found another monitor of the same kind that has a broken screen but a functional camera so I'll be able to keep an eye on DD and the new LO at the same time.

It's true that that could happen but they do sell secure monitors that would prevent that. Mine isn't secure but I make sure to turn the camera off when DD isn't sleeping just in case someone should be spying so they can't hear me saying we're getting ready to leave town or something. And our camera is pointed solely at DD's crib, no other part of the room can be seen so someone seeing me BF was never an issue...

  • I also have a summer infant monitor and will be buying an additional camera for #2.  I still use my camera with DD and love just being able to know what she's up to in there.

My only suggestion - get the warranty!  We were lucky and BRU let us switch out a camera that broke and then we bought the warranty.   The parts would have been more expensive than the camera.  With the warranty, if anything breaks, you just go to the store and get a new one.

it's my understanding that the digital ones are the ones that are secure. we had a summer infant with LO#1. it broke right around a year. i hear a lot of people saying that. Going to try the Motorolla this time, it seems to get much better reviews.

Oddly enough, im in the same boat. I did not have one with DD, but would really like one with two cameras, one for each LO.

My friend actually bought a home security monitor instead of a 'baby video' monitor, and its pretty neat. Being a photographer, shes away from her LO some nights but has it set up so she can check the video feed right on her phone, so she can check on him while she and her husband are away. I love that idea, and I may go that route

We've had a Summer Infant model for 3 years.  I love it and may get another camera, but I'm not sure.  Someone else in my neighborhood has one too, because when we first set it up, I had it on channel B and could see somebody else's baby.  I didn't know whose though.  It doesn't bother me, because even if someone sees a baby on the monitor, they don't know which house it's in.

Also, a creeper would have to drive around the neighborhood very slowly with monitors in their car in order to actually pick up a signal, and then they'd still have to guess where it's coming from.

  • We just replaced our old Summer Infant Day and Night video monitor (which had broken) with the Motorola one.  I love it!  I like that I can move around the room in case DD gets out of bed (which is rare!), and it has a two-way intercom so I can tell her to go to sleep!  It also comes with 2 cameras (the version they sell at BRU, not BBB) so I can scan between both kiddos!

I just got the Motorola one with a Groupon deal; it is was 89.99!    We don't have one with DS1, but it was such a great deal so I couldn't pass it up.  I am really excited to be able to snoop on him!  ;)
