Breastfeeding

Is this a BF myth?

I've read that what I eat can affect my milk, and I've also read that it can't. The thing is that I love a particular dish from my country (Peru), but every time I've had it my LO cries and moves like crazy at the breast, which she never does otherwise. The dish is beans and rice mixed together, then breaded and fried, served with meat and fried bananas (it's called Tacu tacu, if somebody knows it). Could this affect the milk? My doctor said to eat what I've always eaten, but I don't want to affect my baby. Sorry if this has been asked a million times before! TIA!

Re: Is this a BF myth?

  • I have heard it both ways as well. I say you know your baby and if something you are eating is bothering her, then I would avoid it for a bit. You can try again later as your LO will likely outgrow most intolerances.

  • Thanks! I'll avoid Tacu tacu just in case, but I'm dying for some. Too bad... :)

  • Maybe see if there is a particular ingredient in it that is bothering the baby?  Is there garlic or onion in it?  That might be it, and so lessening or doing away with one ingredient can help too.

  • Milk proteins can bother some babies with sensitivies.  The taste of your foods is in your milk a small amount, so I guess some babies might not like the taste of certain things.

However, it is a myth that foods that make us gassy (like beans or broccoli) can make the baby gassy.  Those foods make us gassy because of their fiber content, and fiber is not passed through breastmilk.

Anyway, I think I'd try it a time or 2 more to be sure that it was really that food that was bothering her.
