2nd Trimester

Numbness and tingling in hands and arms

I'm 25 weeks pregnent with my first child. For about a month now I have been having intermitent numbness and tingling in my hands and arms. At night it sometimes becomes severe causing a burning sensation in both arms making it dificult to sleep. Has anyone else had these symptoms? Did they go away after delivering the baby?

  • I read that while you are pregnant you are more prone to carpel tunnel syndrome.  That could be what you are experiencing.  You should ask your doctor.

This exactly.  I got carpal tunnel after I had DS, and then I wore night braces and it mostly went away, and then it has been back again since I got pregnant again.

  • I agree, sounds like carpal tunnel.  I had it in both wrists with DS.  I'd forgotten about that and am not looking foward to it again.  I had a brace for both wrists that helped quite a bit.  Talk to your OB.

  • I only had it happen once.  It was after I was under really bright flourescent lighting and my vision went funny and I started freaking out.  I've had numbness/tingling from sleeping on my hands/staying in a position.  I went to the OB over the first incident and he wasn't worried but is sending me to a neurologist just to make sure there's nothing they are missing.  Praying for a good outcome.

  • I had it in my hands about 2 weeks ago. I knew it was carpal tunnel but didn't know that it was common during pregnancy until reading about it online. I had an Ace bandage so I wrapped it around my hand that hurt the most. And since then I just make sure I don't use that hand to push myself up off the bed or bend it too much. So far so good. But if it's worse, definitely talk to your doc. I will too.

  • this could be a circulation problem or blood pressure/blood sugar issue....maybe it's nothing serious but I would bring it up with your dr. just to be safe! :)

  • I've also read that the swelling from your feet and legs can equalize through your body during the night causing pressure on the nerves of your hands.
