Multiples

Lurker with a question...

I'm looking for opinions on my betas.  At 9 dpo they were 12.  At 11 dpo they were 85.  That was a doubling time of about 17 hours.  Now at 22 dpo they are at 19,000.  Doubling time 33 hours.  These numbers seem way higher than the ones I see on singleton moms' posts.  I was just wondering if any of you ladies had seen numbers like these?  My OB won't give an opinion either way, and my 1st u/s isn't for 3 weeks.  Any advice is welcome!! Thanks!

Re: Lurker with a question...

  • Congrats on your pregnancy!

Betas aren't actually a reliable indicator on whether or not there is more than one baby in there, since everyone's body produces HCG differently.  I know it's hard to wait, but you won't know for sure until your first u/s.

All of this. My friend had betas almost identical to mine (off by literally one or two numbers) and she's only PG with one. Another friend of mine had betas much higher than me and again, was only PG with one.

    Congrats on your PG!

  • Congrats!  I don't know if my betas are still in my signature but mine were low compared to most of the people I know and I am the only one pregnant with twins.  My doctor told me specifically your betas cannot indicate multiples as each woman's body produces pregnancy hormones at different rates. The only thing that matters is doubling time to check viability.

If you are concerned about multiples or are at a higher risk due to fertility treatments etc, you can always ask them to move your u/s up.  I honestly wouldn't worry about it at this point or put too much weight in the numbers other than they are doubling.

Happy and healthy 9 months to you!

  • Like PPs said, betas aren't a reliable indicator. You could be PG with twins or you could be PG with a singleton. You won't know until your u/s. For reference, my beta at 9dp5dt (the equivalent of 14dpo) was 452 and two days later was 1,026.
