Massage in first trimester?

Can you get masssages in the first trimester? I am 8 weeks and want to start pampering myself but read online that maybe you should wait until after 1st tri is over? thoughts?

Re: Massage in first trimester?

  • My widwife cleared me for one, and I asked the resort where we stayed about their prenatal massage. Basically, if you do get one, they will stay away from your lower back and any pressure points that are labor inducing. The resort also wanted me to sign a liability form and that was a bit much for me, so I opted out. Do what's right for you though!

  • The jury is still out on that one, but I wouldn't do it. You don't want too much pressure on your body, nor do you want them touching any pressure points that could trigger labor. Wait until second tri, or better yet, wait until third tri when you're super sore from carrying that big baby around.

  • I've had two.

You have to call and make sure that the masseuse is pre-natal certified, however -- and even then, some spas will not to massage in the first tri.

I have been struggling with headaches, so I've had them focus on scalp, neck, shoulders and it has been a huge relief.

  • I'm not sure when is the best time to start getting massages, but check with your insurance about any coverage.  My insurance covers adjustments and massages (1 hour) for pregnant women with no copay!  I can't wait to start going!

I work at Massage Envy, and YES, first trimester prenatal massage is fine. As PP said, make sure the therapist (please don't refer to them as massueses..) is trained in prenatal. Most places should make you lay on your side with bolsters or body pillows, even if you are only a few weeks along and not showing yet. A therapist trained in prenatal massage will know what areas to avoid (low back, etc) and what pressure to use. Prenatal massages have so many benefits, throughout your entire pregnancy. Just make sure you are going to a legit place. I recommend Massage Envy ;)

Actually, both those massages I referred to were at a Massage Envy so I whole heartedly agree -- I've been getting super expensive spa massages my whole life and recently bought a membership because the prices can't be beat.

Question though - I didn't know masseuse was "out."  My bad.  How come? I'll stop using it -- just curious.

  • I'm a Massage Therapist and we recommend that you don't have massages during your 1st trimester!!
  • You could always opt for a facial and foot massage.  I beg DH to rub my feet and he'll do it for ... oh.. 5 seconds.  I'm dying for a foot massage!
