Cloth Diapering

Prepping Questions

We're working on building our cloth diaper stash, and we've decided to go the AIO, and Ai2 route.  We have some Bumgenius Freetimes, which have microfiber, and some Grovia shells with organic cotton inserts.  How do i prep these?  I know I have to wash the organic cotton inserts 6-10 times for max absorbancy, and the Freetimes only need 1 or 2 washes.   Can I wash the organic cotton inserts with the freetimes, all in the wash with my regular clothing laundry?  Do I need to wash the cotton inserts separately from the rest of my laundry?  Can I wash the freetimes with the rest of my laundry.  I'm just wondering if I can consolidate laundry loads, or if this is a no-no in cloth diaper world.  Oh also, when prepping, do I need to wash AND dry the diapers in the dryer at least 6 times by themselves?  I feel like thats using a lot of water and electricity. Thanks.

Re: Prepping Questions

  • The faster way to prep natural fiber inserts (without elastic or snaps) is to boil them for half an hour then wash/dry once.  Otherwise, you do need to dry them between washings.  You could probably wash with towels, but I wouldn't wash with regular laundry as you need more detergent to wash regular laundry than you want to put on cloth diapers.

  • Prep the microfiber and natural fibers separately.

I do them separately from other laundry, but mainly because I use All F&C & fabric softener on my regular laundry, but CD-safe detergent on my CDs (either Charlie's or Rock & Green).

And yes, dry between each wash cycle.

  • You need to wash your freetimes and cloth diapers separately to prep them.  Throw the freetimes in with a load of clothes and just use diaper detergent on that load of clothes.

I prepped my initial purchase of prefolds with towels.  The first wash and dry I did separately because of all the lint that comes off, but after that, when I did a load of towels, I threw in the cotton prefolds.  The first three washes or so I dried after every wash, but after that I dried after every other wash.  I used my cloth diaper detergent on my towels when I washed them. Hey, if the CD detergent is designed to get poo off of diapers then it is strong enough in my opinion to wash towels.  It took about a week to get them all prepped, but it saved on the water doing it that way.

I may also be in the norm but I used bleach on the cotton prefolds for the first wash.  I thought the bleach would be stronger and help strip the oils off faster.  There is probably no merit behind this thinking, but that is what I did.  BG recommends washing the diapers with bleach once a month anyway so that is what I did.

I used detergent in every load.  I know some people say you don't need it, but if you are trying to wash the "oils" out of the natural fabrics then you need something to break down the oils to get them off.  Personally, I don't think hot water is enough to do this with.
