Ease my mind

There's always something new everyday to make me stress out. Today it's my boss. I'm a paraprofessional at a school. I emailed my principal 3.5 weeks ago letting her know about my pregnancy. She got back to me today. The response I got was super short, "I'm happy for you, call me as soon as you can to set up an appointment before school starts."

I'm freaking out about what this meeting could be about. Anything having to do with fmla or things like that go through the district office, not her, so it can't be about that. This lady intimidates me more that any other boss I've ever had and she's very hot and cold, you never know what you're gonna get when you talk to her. And why before school starts? I live an hour away and school starts in a week, what is so crucial that I have to go in early?

Does anyone who works at a school know why this would be happening? I'm so scared and stressed right now.

  • What was the nature of your e-mail beyond saying you're pregnant? Maybe she wants to discuss your plans for leave (as far as how long you plan on being gone, when it will start, etc...) and talk about finding a substitute for you. Most adults working in a school need to be replaced in the interim of their absence because their role in school is so important!  I am an elementary school teacher, and that would be my guess.

She can't fire you, under the FMLA.  Because if she did it would be pretty obvious it was due to the pregnancy, being that she wasn't asking you to come in for a meeting prior to the news.

My other suggestion is that while most of the paperwork and notification for your leave goes through the admin. office, maybe she just wants to meet to let you know what steps you should be taking with the office to have all your ducks in a row for when you do leave.  I wouldn't worry about it, it seems like she just is on top of things and wants to get the ball rolling on setting things up for your absence. Smile

  • I'm not sure why your principal wants to meet, but I guess if it were my principal, he would just want to make sure there was a plan of action in place to assure that the kiddos were receiving the help they need.

A lot of things have happened over my summer so my email was about all of it. I moved into a new house, I got engaged, and I found out I am pregnant. I let her know I am planning on staying until the baby comes and then coming back again for the next school year. So I thought I covered my bases on anything she might be concerned about. I'm hoping it's about my assignment since I was assigned to kindergarten for this year. I think kindergarten and being pregnant will be hard, very physical, and exhausting but I'll do what I have to do to keep my job. But if she wants to put me somewhere else I'm all for it. I'm hoping that's what it'll be about but gains I'm still nervous.
