Nappers in the Mothers room

So in my office there's a "Mothers and Quiet Room" where I go to pump. There's a note to "please allow mother's precedence". 3 times now I've gone to pump and someone else is in there I'm fairly sure I'm the only nursing mom in the office right now. Once it was an older lady doing stretches she has a bad back and today someone had their son in there taking a nap. I don't mind sharing the room but it's annoying when I have to wait to pump, I start feeling antsy and uncomfortable. I've only had to wait 20 min or so but I'm afraid of this becoming a trend, I think maybe people need to be reminded what the main purpose of the room is. WWYD?

ETA: sorry about the typos, stupid mobile site strikes again.

  • Our mother's room is only for pumping moms but its also linked to an outlook calendar where the moms block off a slot. Maybe you can ask the company to put something like that together? So people can see its being used? If not, maybe you can post a sign that says in use for pumping mom from 8:30-9am, 11:30-12pm and 2:30-3 (or whatever times you use it). If someone is in there during these times then knock on the door and ask them to leave.

  • If I went in and found someone's child in the room sleeping I would have woken him up and walked him back to his mom. Why would someone have their child sleeping out of their sight at work.  Once in a while we will see someone's child at work but they are never without their parents nor is it allowed.  If someone was streatching I would have knocked on the door and said excuse me I need to pump and this is the only time I can do it.  I am sure the person would leave.  You may need to say something to HR so they can set a calander up or send out a friendly reminder about the room.  If you are the only mom who is pumping and it has been a while your coworkers may not realize there is someone who needs to pump.

The lady stretching did leave. I didn't realize it was someone's kid until later, but I thought it was a little odd too. I was also thinking maybe folks have forgotten what the room is for and HR needs to remind everyone. We'll have 3 nursing moms over the next year so I like the idea of a calendar. Thanks!
  • Our pumping room can be used by others if they need to rest or have a quiet room, but nursing moms have preference and it says so in the employee handbook.  It's set up so you can book the room in your Outlook calendar, which was a necessity when there were up to four of trying to get in there two to three times a day.  Yet even though our times were booked on the calendar, we'd all find people in the room when we needed it.  I was not shy about knocking on the door and telling whoever was in there that I had the room reserved.  There's no way I'd wait 20 minutes to get in there.  Occassionally there'd be another mom in there who'd been running late because of a meeting or something and I gladly waited a couple minutes to let her finish pumping, but to finish stretching, sorry, no.

  • I am just jealous of a pumping room. I had a cold, unheated bathroom in the middle of winter in New England
  • I think the calendar is definitely a good idea & they could post it on the door or next to the door so ppl know.

In fairness though, if it is deemed a room not solely for nursing mothers but for all employees to use as a quiet room, then I think the stretching lady has every right to be in there...particularly if it is a medical condition she is working on- why is pumping more important than someone else's medical condition? She left which was very nice of her & according to policy since it says the pumping moms get precedence but some of the responses make it sound like she shouldn't have been there to begin with or that pumping takes precedence over anything else, period & I have to disagree with that approach. What if someone needs to administer a medication to themselves or is undergoing PT for something & has to do certain things a number of times a day to rehab or whatever.  A sleeping kid is odd but I would assume that was just a pretty random infrequent thing.  Most nursing rooms I have seen have had schedules that you have to sign up for & are posted for others to know about & I bet they'd do that for you, they just haven't had to in the past.  GL!

  • I'd be asking the sleeping child and stretching coworker to leave. That's not what the room is intended for!

  • I would love a room like this!  Specifically, for first tri-mester napping moms.

I do like the suggestion to ask if can be booked in Outlook like a meeting room.

    Good luck!

These are both great ideas. I think perhaps the second one is even better, since some people are bad about checking Calendar.

you are right about  that. thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

  • This is why our mother's rooms now have locks and keys checked out by the security guard.  I work in a large office building with several rooms, and they used to be just open, and then the mother could lock it from the inside.  This was before I started pumping but there were reports of people in there sleeping or for hours at at time.  Maybe you could offer this suggestion to your company.
