Is LO using a plate yet?

I have not introduced plates to my twins yet at meal time.  I put the food on their high chair tray.

Since they love to throw food and cups and forks off the tray and watch them hit the floor and clap (!?!), I don't think now would be a good time to try plates, but thought I would ask.

Was wondering when is the appropriate age?

They have been using forks for awhile and just recently are getting good at stabbing food and getting it to stick on the fork tines.

We introduced a plate about 4 months ago.  Even though it has a suction bottom she still manages to lift it up and spill her food occasionally.  One day she will leave it alone.

  • We haven't yet. When we go out to eat we use those disposable place mats/table covers that stick to the table, keep their food between us and give them a little bit at a time

We don't use one.  He chucks everything on the floor as it is and I don't want to give him more ammo yet.

  • Yes, we give her a plastic toddler plate at each meal. She usually eats off it just fine until her last few bites. Then, she dumps what's left onto her tray and wants me to take her plate.

  • We introduced finger foods immediately at 6 months and our daycare provider started giving him a plate then.  We waited until about a month and a half ago.  He still flips his plate onto his tray when he's done eating, but he hasn't dropped it onto the floor yet.

  • We started about a month ago. He does really well with it - which surprised me. He does try and push it off his high chair when he is done though, so we try and keep an eye on that.

Once we introduced the plate, he also stopped throwing his sippy on the floor. So it has actually improved our dinnertimes!

  • Yes, DD2 uses a plate.

When DD1 was this age she would throw her plates. They make toddler plates w/ a rubber bottom but they were a PITA to stick together. I switched to paper plates and taped them to the table.

This is what Chloe does too.  And then if the food is right she'll start finger painting her tray...

  • Yes, DS uses a plate.  THere are definitely times he tries to throw it on the floor but I'm usually sitting right next to him and can stop him before it's too late.

  • Tried a plate tonight. Owen had his food dumped out onto his tray within five seconds of the plate being set down. My H replated the food and he did it again. Amelia did much better than Owen and got upset when we tried to take away the plate to clear it off.

This is exactly what E does.  She doesn't throw the plate, just dumps what is left of the food on to her tray and hands me the plate.

When we go out to eat, I take one of her plates with us.  She typically doesn't dump the plate while out to eat, she is too excited to try new things, the kid loves food!

  • our 16 month old son uses the divided plates and sometimes the flat plates. he also uses an adult fork and a baby plastic spoon. he gets frustrated with the plastic forks because he cannot stab the food and make it stay on there. we have been training him for months. at first he just played around with the forks but now he is a pro and eats without throwing the plate and he uses the utensils reguraly but somtimes uses his fingers:) we took off the tray off the high chair, scooted him up to the table and let him eat with the family. he has learned through watching us eat and practice, practice, practice.

  • P uses a plate. When he is done he picks it up and hands it to me. And if I don't get it in a timely manner (read: immediately) he then throws it on the floor.
