NMR: Resignation Letter

I resigned from my job yesterday and I need to write a resignaton letter.  But I have no idea what to write.  DH says it just needs to say why I'm leaving.  I don't think that's appropriate because I'm leaving because I've been very unhappy for quite some time and just couldn't take it anymore.  (I know that sounds like just up and quit but DH and I have been talking about me quitting since I started complaining about my job, it wasn't just out of the blue.)  DH has only ever had to write a letter once and it was because he got a new job.  Can you ladies help me out?  TIA!!

Re: NMR: Resignation Letter

  • I don't think a resignation letter needs to state why, just that you are resigning effective X date.  Its for the company's records, so they have written verification of your choice to leave and when you did so.  I definitely wouldn't go into why you are unhappy, because that can come back to bite you if you ever need that office for a reference in the future.  I would keep it very short and to the point.

Congrats on resigning, btw.  It sounds like you'll be much happier at home!

Ditto this!  Keep it short, sweet, simple and to the point.  If you want to add fluff, you can add something along the lines of 'I have enjoyed my time here at XYZ company and appreciate the opportunities I have been given.' or something along those lines.

Here's a sample one I found online that is pretty straightforward:

    Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name:

I would like to inform you that I am resigning from my position as Account Executive for the Smith Agency, effective August 1.

Thank you for the opportunities for professional and personal development that you have provided me during the last five years. I have enjoyed working for the agency and appreciate the support provided me during my tenure with the company.

If I can be of any help during this transition, please let me know.

  • don't tell them you're unhappy just in case you ever need to come back.  And if they ask which my boss did ask my husband.  Just say I have some personal things I have to take care of.  You have twins.  That should be enough of a reason.
  • I'm in a high turnover profession and have written plenty of resignation letters due to moves and on the job misery ;). I would google resignation letter templates and start from there. My current agency requires an official reason for leaving, but "personal" will suffice. I just included it in one sentence..."Due to family/personal/medical (whatever you want) obligations..." No one ever really gets on me about it. Like PP mentioned, you should also thank them for the experience, regardless of how you really feel. Something good must have come from the job (friends, professional growth, contacts in your field).

If you would like to go into more detail about the reasons you are leaving, you can always do so in an exit interview. All of my jobs have always set up a meeting with HR or my supervisor on my last day to discuss areas of improvement.

  • What the others said.  It's also possible that HR will do an exit interview and may ask you why you left so you can bring up whatever you are comfortable saying then.

  • I wouldn't tell them that you've been unhappy there. You'll want to use them as a reference in the future if you decide to start working again. You don't want to burn bridges.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • I agree with PPs that it doesn't have to say why you're leaving. BUT, I actually mentioned in mine something to the effect of "At this time, I feel it's important to be home with my growing family." but made it sound better. :) I found a sample maternity letter that I went off of.
