XP 2 month check up

DS had his 2 month check up yesterday. When he was born he was only 6 lbs and was 19 1/4" long. Yesterday he was 8 lbs 7 oz and 22 inches long. The nurse said that was great. He is EBF and they said he should be gaining between 1-2 lbs a month so he's right on. Then when the doctor came in he said DS was in the 6th percentile for length and 1st for weight and to make sure I'm feeding him. I feed DS whenever he is hungry and I let him eat until he is full. He eats the recommended amounts throughout the day and has more than the recommended dirty and wet diapers. So now I'm feeling like maybe my breastmilk isn't providing him with what he needs. But if he was smaller when he was born, then isn't it ok that he's smaller now than other 2 month olds? Has anybody else had this problem? I know he isn't starving so I just don't know what to do to get his weight up I guess. I don't want to feed him when he isn't hungry!

  • If hes growing and healthy and happy then hes fine. I wouldnt worry about the #s too much unless he starts going backwards as far as weight goes. All babies grow at different pases and as long as hes making progress dont worry. :)

  • Kind of. My dd was born 7lb 3 oz and then lost initially. Turns out my milk didn't come in so I had to supplement to get her weight up. Still do what I call " token breast feeding" as there's some milk there but it's not her sustenance. She is 8 wks old and at the last checkup a week or so ago she was 8lbs 7 oz. the doc was concerned before that in trying to get her weight up, but not once she started gaining, even though it wasn't much. I guess my point is that there wasn't much of a concern once she was on the upswing.
  • I'm right there with you - freaking out a bit. We just had my DD's 2 month check up. She was 6 lbs 8 oz at birth and is now only 8 lbs 14 oz (8th percentile). I had been following her on feedings - whenever she wanted it, for however long. My pedi thinks she's not getting enough of the hindmilk. So even though she has plenty of wet diapers, she's not getting the good fat. I'm now trying to feed her for at least 15 minutes on each breast even if she doesn't seem to want it. And during the morning/afternoon, trying harder to space out her feedings so when she does eat, she is really hungry and will get to the hindmlik. I go back for a weight check next week.
