Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How did you choose your formula?

I will be a first time mom in a few months and will eventually move over to formula before my maternity leave is up. I was wondering how you choose the formula you are using? I know you sometimes have to make a change, but how did you initially pick one to start with?

  • The hospital used Similac, so we just stayed with it since lo didn't have any problems with it.

    This except with Enfamil.

FWIW, Similac seems to be the most generous with sending formula checks/coupons and free samples in the mail.

  • Do your wallet a serious favor and try a store brand.  They are nutritionally comparable to any name brand.  All formulas will vary in the fillers they use (so not all babies take well to all formulas anyway) but all are safe.  So if you'd be willing to try Enfamil vs Similac v Gerber, be willing to try Target, Walmart etc because they're perfectly fine and you'll save a lot of money!

  • Our hospital used Similac and that's what we supplemented with. When we switched to formula full time we started using the Similac Sensitive because LO was a bit gassy.

  • My sister works for a pediatrians office so I get Enfamily newborn for free. So thats what I use. I would have switched if had problems with it but shes fine. I think they are basically all the same in some way. So go with what you feel is best or better for your price range. Once we run out of the free stuff I might look into target or walmart brand if I can't afford it.

  • The hospital used Enfamil, so we started with that. LO started having digestive problems, so our pedi recommended Gerber Good Start, and that ended up working for us. GL!

  • I like the Costco brand. It's the same as Enfamil. We will be using it again this time if DD needs it at some point.

  • Our hospital used Enfamil Newborn so we stayed with that. When LO started getting gassy we switched him to Enfamil Gentlease and he hasn't had a problems.
  • My daughter has protein sensitivity so we first started her on Similac Sensitive. When that made her constipated we changed to Similac Alimentum. However, it is way too expensive. When we found that Gerber had a new product called Soothe that is comparable we bought that! It is working great and our daughter is feeling so much better.

Finding the right formula might take a bit of trial and error. Just make sure you get one that won't break your wallet!

  • My pedi recommended GoodStart because of the whey proteins (its gentler) and DS#1 and 2 have done well on it.
