EW. Tonsil Stones...

SO GROSS. :/
I've never had these until I got pregnant!  They're nasty build-up in holes in your tonsils.  I never had holes like that in there before pregnancy.  They feel like you've got something stuck there (because you do! EW!).  Anybody else get or deal with these?

I found this post via google on babycenter from a mom who talked to an ENT about it...This has to be what happened to me.  I thought I was coming down with a cold the week before I got a positive pregnancy test.

I asked my OB about it and he was clueless...probably because it's not common. I thought maybe they had healed up because I hadn't seen anything in there for a while.  Last night, there was gunk in my left tonsil. BOO.

  • I have had them many times. Super gross but so far I have never heard of anything you can do to treat it. So far I have not gotten any size I got pregnant.

  • I've gotten them for as long as I can remember. They are annoying and make my throat hurt. So far the only cure I know of is removing your tonsils- not exactly ideal. Sometimes I can get them out myself with long Q-tips, but it makes me gag. Also not ideal.

  • I've had them since I was a teenager. Just about everyday I pick the gunk out so that they don't get big. It's disgusting, but there is no cure unless you remove your tonsils and I'm not doing that. They get much worse when I drink milk.

  • DH gets them a lot. He has zero gag reflex so he digs them out. He talked to our doctor about them who said that most people get them at one time or another and never know.
  • In high school, I got mono, and since then, I get them sporadically.  A q-tip helps sometimes.  They are gross though!  I haven't seemed to have too big of an issue since being pregnant, but I usually get them more in the colder months.  So, I gues we'll see!

This! My DH gets these constantly. He gags when he digs them out and they smell awful, but it gives him relief. He likes to gargle with peroxide too to help clean out the holes. It seems to help slow them down.

  • I have had these for years. I went to an ENT a few years back to see if there was anything I could do about them. Short of getting my tonsils taken out (which he said wasn't necessary) ...there was not much. He mentioned using a water pick to wash them out (pretty sure I would choke). I have done hte Q-tip thing too. Gross is the only word to describe it.

I also read somewhere that cutting back on milk might help (but I love cereal and I love milk... so not going to do that).

     Good luck!

  • I've had this problem forever.  According to my doctor, your tonsils are suppose to shrink as you get older, but mine never did.  So I have what she calls "abnormally large tonsils" (sounds sexy, right), which trap junk. Typically the build-up will work it's way out, but I am not a patient person so I've learned how to deal with them in a impractical and somewhat gross way.
