Virgin Margarita VENT

Last night my DH and I went out for Mexican.  I was thinking a virgin margarita sounded really good, and was quite looking forward to it. Waiter comes, I order - "Oh, we don't do virgin margaritas."  Wait.  Seriously?  I figured out that this is because all their margaritas are pre-mixed in machines, with booze already added (he did not offer this information and should have), but really - your three bartenders can't figure out how to squeeze a few limes into a glass with some triple sec?  It's a simple cocktail folks.  The waiter really could have saved face by at least checking with someone else, or offering me other non-alcoholic alternatives, but instead just said "NO" and looked at me.

I haven't had many irrationally emotional moments throughout this pregnancy, surprisingly few actually - but when he walked away I almost started crying at the table!

Re: Virgin Margarita VENT

  • Uuuggghhhh! A margarita sounds sooooooo good right now. I am not a big drinker but I have already informed my SO that after I give birth, my first drink will be an enormous margarita on the rocks with salt.

  • That bites, and in San Antonio, tx where i'm from they would offer other non alcholic drinks! I'm sorry they were rude to you! I hope next time things are much better!

I'll make a homeade one if you were close by me!!

  • I agree they should have offered you something different, but really ordering a virgin margarita is a bit of an odd drink. I have been a bartender and found it strange when people order that. You are basically just drinking the sweet & sour mix. Triple Sec is a liqueur, so you can't include that if it is truly "virgin" drink. So I understand why they wouldn't want to serve a virgin margarita, but they should have other options.

Really?  I never would have thought that.  I've ordered virgin margaritas a lot, I love them.  Although thinking about it, I always want the frozen/slushie ones, not the ones on the rocks.  If you mean the ones on the rocks then I totally agree with you.

Anyway, to OP, that sucks so much that you couldn't get one and I would have been just as upset!

  • I gave up on trying to order them out when, on Cinco de Mayo, I ordered a virgin pina colada and got a very real pina colada...  Didn't take me more than a small sip to figure it out, though!  I just make them at home if I feel like one.

  • I was a bartender for 5 years through college and I'm guessing the bartenders aren't full-on bartenders, because they have pre-mixed drinks.  Talk about cheaters!  I'm also guessing the server has no idea what goes into a margarita, or he would have taught the bartenders or made it himself!
  • I'm assuming at this point you are obviously pregnant, so you think he would've figured it out. Nothing wrong with ordering a virgin cocktail. Whatever has happened to great customer service these days? Pregnant or not. Although, I would've gotten pregnant a lot sooner had I known how much power this baby bump could wield ;)

  • I had a waiter at Outback shoot me down recently when I ordered a virgin margarita and I nearly cried. Don't deny the pregnant lady her request! I've had people manage to make me one before, especially if it's a pre-mix. I just ask them to substitute lime juice for the tequila. Smile It's not quite the same but it'll do in a non-alcoholic pinch.

  • When I waited tables I always told people who ordered a virgin marg that it was just sour mix and ice, but if that was ok with them we were happy to make it.  It sucks they wouldn't try to accomadate you, they could have suggested something else or added a touch of strawberry..mmm now that sounds yummy.

Mmmmm..... My mouth is watering now........

  • I bought the crystal light margarita drink mix and it is so good! Not nearly as good as the real thing but tastes enough like one to satisfy my urge.  You should totally try it!
