Daycare wreaking havoc on naps

DS started his trial week at daycare yesterday. I knew we'd be in for some adjustments but I want my happy baby back! Yesterday his teacher said he did really well. No crying when i left him, he played in a bunch of toys and on the floor, had his bottle like a champ...but no nap. Now DS is a good sleeper usually so without his naps he's a hot mess. I figured he probably would have a hard time at first since there's new surroundings and people, but how long does this last!?

He was so clingy and crabby when i picked him up it was unbearable. Today I made a point to drop him off before his first nap so that hopefully he'd go right to sleep. He even fell asleep in the car but then daycare called to ask me a question and I asked if he napped and they said no :( Why doesn't he just close his eyes!?

Anybody had a similar experience with the transition to daycare? When does it go back to normal? (Just looking for a little reassurance I guess)

Re: Daycare wreaking havoc on naps

  • I didn't have this issue at first, but have had it off and on since I've been back to work.  There are days where Ian doesn't get a nap at all or doesn't get good naps.  And you're right, it's pretty unbearable by the time I get him.  Which completely sucks because my time with him in the evenings is so limited, and all I get is a crabby baby.  Ian has actually changed his bed time because of the lack of his afternoon nap.  He's pretty much always gone to bed at 8:30, but now he's going to bed at about 7:30!  Again, it sucks because that means I get him for about an hour and a half once we get home...and half that time is spent fighting him because he's tired, feeding, and bath time.  Now, this is not an every day thing for us...and he's not in a "daycare".  My mom and sisters watch him for me...so if they're on the go it usually means no good nap for him.  I'd say that you're issue may last a week or so, as he gets use to his surroundings and use to his new routine.  There are so many new things for him to see and do, and new people trying to get him down for those naps.  I'd say give him a week or so to adjust.  It may not be fun for you in the meantime, but he should adjust after a while.

  • This is totally normal.  DD took about 3 days to fully adjust.  She has always been a sleeping champ and gives me no problems with naps and bedtime.  The first day she slept for a total of 15 min.  The next day about 45 min.  Then by the third day she must have adjusted to the noise and she did just fine.

Now she has been known to take a 3 hour nap on occassion.  This week she graduated to the crawler room and I was afraid that it would take her some time to adjust again but I think it's been easier because they have a loose schedule and most of the kids are sleeping around the same time which makes it a little easier I think.

Just hang in there and things will work out just fine!

  • we didn't have this as an adjustment issue, but Mia does not nap super well at daycare.  Usually she gets about 1.5 hours total, but a couple times last week it was one one hour nap!  She's pretty happy and not a beast when I take her home, so I'm not super worried.  But in general, it's just a lot harder for them to nap with so much going on!  I am guessing this will get much better as she gets older and there is a structured nap time in her day, vs now in an infant room where each baby has their needs met as they happen.  Good luck and hope this gets better.  I do hear this is a common issue at transition.

  • It's totally normal. Unfortunately, it doesn't always get better, or even stay better. DS has been in daycare since 10 weeks.  He was napping okay, but now that he has started getting really curious about the world, it's hit or miss. He usually takes two naps, but length can vary from 20 min to 2 hours. I just try to roll with it.
  • My experience with daycare napping is that it takes a couple of weeks. Daycare made ds2 an awesome napper as a toddler though. They all nap at the same time. He was like clockwork until giving up napping at age 4.5.

  • DD has been in daycare 2 months and today is the 1st day she napped as much as she does at home.  DS took almost 4 months before he napped at Daycare.  Some babies just don't nap well in a noisy environment.
