silly questions about percentiles...

I should know this so I'm ashamed I have to ask, but if the doctor says LO is in the 44th percentile for growth, is that considered slightly smaller than "average" with the 50th percentile being "average"? (With the extremes: the 1st percentile is tiny and 99th percentile is massive?) Thanks!

Re: silly questions about percentiles...

  • Correct. Your baby is slightly smaller than the 'average'. As far as I understand its perfectly fine as long as he/she is not drastically going up and down in percentiles (if that makes sense) and everything is developing normally.

  • Thanks! I thought I was right but then I second guessed myself. :o)

  • I had trouble understanding them at first too. But DD1 had some weight gain struggles, so we became very familiar. Essentially, it just means your baby is bigger than 44% of babies the exact same age, and one LO is here it'll be gender specific as well. So If you have a baby that's 16th percentile for weight and 78th percentile for height, you know your baby is long and lean versus them being in the 16th for both height and weight, and then they're proportionate, just petite.

Ahh thanks for the explanation. We know it's a girl so I wonder if that is already factored in to the percentile? I would assume so. I'm not all that concerned about percentiles right now, but I like numbers and I was just curious. Thanks! :o)

  • According to ultrasounds my son was in the 10%... supposed to be very small. Ultrasound was WRONG I worried for nothing. He came out 1 week early at 7lbs 6oz (pretty average if you ask me) so don't worry and don't always go by what the ultrasound says. Since his first few months check-ups he was always in the 90% for weight and 95% for height.... Yes ultrasound, you were wrong Lol.

  • My little guy has always been under 10% for height and weight (such a peanut... I'm tiny though too).  However, his head circumference is around the 95th percentile.  So, I'm raising a little lollipop.  He doesn't look weird or anything, it's just a number on a chart.  Also, every doctor seems to measure around the head a little differently, so it really depends on where exactly the tape lies.

  • Yep, my little guy is in the 97th percentile size wise...my nether regions cringe just thinking about it!
