2nd Trimester

Cough Suppressant

I have had a head cold for the past 2 days and it has now migrated its way into my chest.  I have a nasty cough and every time I do it, it feels like my baby might pop out!  Does anyone have any suggestions on what meds are safe to take?

Re: Cough Suppressant

  • Pretty sure any of the tylenol products are safe, but I'm not 100% sure. Can you call and talk to your OB nurse or doctor to ask their suggestions? I know you'll probably get lots of different answers based on what others have been told.

  • There are no cough suppressants that you can take. I use hot lemon water with honey when I had a bad cough for 3 weeks. You can take robitussin but not the DM which is the cough suppressant.

  • I would try Elderberry extract, found at a natural store.  Double check with your doctor.  I don't take anything like cough suppressants, Tylenol, etc. normally though.

Also, to add.  I think the only thing that's actually going to HELP you get better is time, rest, water and immune friendly foods (fruits and veggies).  The rest is just going to hold you over until it resolves on its own anyway.

  • If you have a "what to expect" book, theres a whole section in the back of it that list all the approved meds during pregnancy and homeopathic alternatives. If not, im sure you can go on WebMD or the what to expect website (or google) for that matter and find the answers you are looking for. Feel better soon :(  Being sick (let alone sick and pregnant) is no fun for anyone!!

  • I'm having this same problem and the coughing hurts. My Dr. told me to take Robitussin with no added ingredients. No cold or flu or anything, just plain Robitussin.

  • You can also take Delsym (sp?) for the cough too. I prefer the grape to the orange. I cannot stomach Robitussin.

here here! even prior to being pregnant, I would take all the meds to stop coughing, etc...never really helped. I just used reg tea, honey, and lemon. During work, I would use cough drops. My doctor said Tylenol or Robistussin but the ones that are safe do not have the ing to stop all the yuckies. I noticed some posters said they are taking the multi-symptom Tylenol which is not good to take, just look at the ing, they are not recommended during preg. When doctors say Tylenol products, they mean the good ol' basic stuff...when i kept giving in, the pharmacist would cheer me on and give me hope to walk away from the meds....loved her!! Oh and my dr also said sudefed I think, but only the one behind the counter, which is odd to me...I passed!!

  • Poor thing. I had the same thing last week. I coughed so hard I actually threw up. Twice. And I coughed so hard I pee'd my pants! It was awful. I called my MW in the morning crying and she said for Pete's sake, go get some robitussin!  GL mama, hope it passes soon!

Oh, also, spit out any phlegm you cough up. Otherwise you'll just keep coughing that junk up! Gross.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I though dm stands for dextromethorphan, which is an expectorant. Taking regular robitussin which is still a cough suppressant should help somewhat.

Same here..I had a terrible cold about a month ago and my dr office's "safe meds" list is: Cough:  Non-alcohol containing preparations such as Triaminic, plain Robitussin, Robitussin PE, or Robitussin DM. I went with the Robitussin DM, which tastes TERRIBLE (esp when it's the ONLY thing you can taste for days) but it worked.

I think so because when I was sick I didn't have a cough so I passed on the Robo since it was a suppressant. I thought why take something I didn't need...I just had a sore throat....
