18 month old & a 5 hour flight.. questions..

We will be going on a 5 hr flight here soon and this is going the first flight LO and I have ever been on. Hubby has been on a flight once, many years ago (before everything got super strict).

So, I have some questions for those who have been there:

What are good toys to entertain LO?

She going to be a lap baby. :/ This kind of freaks me out. For those of you who have held LOs on your laps, did you use bubble wrap or anything like that for the carseat? They told me they just put the carseats down with all the other luggage and I don't want it getting messed up. Their solution was for me to bubble wrap it.

We all have asthma (LOs isn't quite diagnoised, but yeah) and will need to bring inhalers. LO will also need to bring prescription anti histamine in a bottle. How are they with medicene?

I guess those are the only questions I can think of for now. But if there is any other advice you can think of, I'd appreciate it.

  • I am not sure about the inhalers, but I know medication they generally open and wave a strip over it to test the fumes. They will do the same if you take bottles/cups with milk already in them.

We have never taken a car seat so I am not sure on that one.

As for activities, if you have some sort of Ipad/kindle fire that you can put shows on, it helps. I also recommend washable crayons (triangle ones, if you can find them!) and coloring books/paper. We also took a magnadoodle and it was great. Stickers if she will play with them, snacks helped kill time too. My LO liked to look through the skymall catalog and watch out the window. We also took a couple of new snacks and small new toys that she had never played with from the $ store.

  • You could bubble wrap and bag the carseat. They also make bags with wheels that you can put the seat in. That will help you get it through the airport so you can check it at the gate. Then it doesn't travel as far with the baggage handlers and will be on top!

For our last flight I had a travel magnadoodle and animal flash cards which Ro liked. Snacks are vital. Also just kinda going with it is vital. We had a shorter flight so I avoided the iPad since she'd have a meltdown when we have to turn it off. For a longer flight I would have used it.  I will say I will never do lap baby again. It was easy when Ro was tiny. It really sucked the last two times. Wish DH weren't such a miser. LOL!

Medications are no problem. If they are liquid separate them and put them in a quart size bag. If the bottle is less than 3 ounces that is all you have to do. If it is bigger tell them you have liquid medication.

  • Stickers and crayons are good toys, also we had some entertainment with pipe cleaners and Cheerios (putting the Cheerios on and off, etc). I basically gave him a snack whenever he got bored, then toy. Snack toy, snack toy. For the full 5 hours. Bring a few pouches for take off and landing (helps the ears). IPad or some sort of DVD player would be awesome (of course, my LO got into shows like 2 weeks after the flight, but I tried.) We got up and wlaked to the back area a couple times.

It's most likely going to suck, but it will be less sucky then if you were flying alone, so there is a bright side. Bottom line is, toddlers don't want to be confined for that long. Do whatever you have to do to get through it so you can enjoy vacation!

  • We flew with DD 2 times at the 18 month mark and she was really good both times.

Bring tons of toys and food/snacks.  Magna doodle is great. We also have a portable DVD player to watch during the flight which helped tons. On both flights we were lukcy enough to have an empty seat next to us so we spread out and DD napped. I've heard that those cling on window things are great for plane rides--they can just pull them on and off the plane window for a while.

As for snacks, I brought her favorite things and a lot of variety. Snacks definitely kept her busy.

Also, get one of those carseat bags with wheels. They are worth it!

  • I haven't taken DS on a flight yet but I've heard that an Ipad and snacks are the best distractions.  Good luck!  I hope your LO cooperates!
