Weaning check in...

As requested.

How's it going?

We're still at wake up and before bed, but I'm thinking of dropping the pre bed one tonight.  Dd has gotten increasingly clingy about nursing.  Now when she cleans out both sides, she loses her mind and has a tantrum if I unlatch her.  I'm pretty sure she'd keep bfing on an empty boob for an hour.  It's reeeeally sad and I can't handle it anymore.   I'll be out of town tonight so I'm going to have H give her a sippy of Wcm before bed.  I'm undecided on whether or not to have him warm it.  I suppose he can try cold first.   Whaaaa this is hard!

Re: Weaning check in...

  • I love your new sig pic! We started reading books at bedtime after nursing. That way he will still get some extra snuggle time before bed without nursing. I would try cold milk first just to because it's easier.

This week we dropped to once a day, at bedtime. I dropped the morning session because I would rather be full/uncomfortable at the end of the day than overnight. Day 2 is going well so far. I just feed him breakfast right away instead of nursing first. I can't decide if we will wait two weeks or just one. We waited two before we dropped this last session. I guess it will depend on how quickly my boobs adjust.

Emotionally, I'm done. I love nursing and snuggling, but I'm ready to be done.

  • I don't feel like I'm making any progress.  I need help :(

We are still BFing first thing in the morning, 1-2 times during the day, and before bed.

Offering a sippy with WCM is going well (she's never taken a bottle, boob only), but she only drinks a 2-4 ounces at a time.  So I've been trying to be really proactive and offer the sippy very frequently throughout the day to make sure she's getting enough.  I'm also trying to offer lots of healthy snacks to make sure she's not really hungry when she's trying to nurse.

I don't have any clue what to do when she starts clawing at my shirt to try to get to my boob. I have tried offering the sippy at this point instead of nursing, but she's really insistent and gets angry and throws a fit.  I don't know what to do so I give in and nurse.  I feel like the daytime sessions should get cut first, but if someone else thinks otherwise, I'm open to suggestions!

We cut out the afternoon sessions first. We started the with 5pm and then the 1pm. Could you go for a walk or turn on some music to dance instead of nursing? Can you offer a snack? What about taking a bath? Just try to find a fun distraction that will keep you two engaged but not close enough to nurse. I don't know if that will help, but it's worth a shot.

Does she nurse to sleep or just nurse at bedtime? Can your DH do bedtime for a while so that you aren't around to nurse? You could try that with wake-up/breakfast too.

    Thank you for your reply!

We nurse to sleep for naps about 60% of the time, and to bed at night 100% of the time. With naps, I really think it is just the habit, I am feeding her milk and snacks between meals, so I don't think she is truly hungry at nap time.  And I do not nurse her until she is asleep, she is usually wide awake when I lay her down.

I think I'm going to do what you said and try for distraction from nursing throughout the day.  Then once we stop nursing during the day DH is going to have to help with putting her to bed.  As for the morning, do you wake up and immediately have breakfast? She's always hungry first thing in the a.m.!

We switched to books instead of nursing for naps. Our last session is bedtime, and we read right after he finishes nursing. I would distract until nap time and en read books in her room before you lay her down. I would also add books somewhere into your bedtime routine so that she will still have that once you finish nursing.

I used to nurse at 7:30 and feed breakfast as soon as we get to work at 8 (he comes with me). Now I just fed him fruit or a quick breakfast at 7:30 and a little more food at 8. I'm sure he could hold off until 8, but I just wanted the transition to non-nursing at wake-up to go as smoothly as possible. I will probably try to hold him off next week and see how it goes.

  • I want to start weaning, but with the move and DD having to go to a baby sitters starting next week, I'm worried about too much change at one time. I think we'll see how next week goes and then go from there.

  • Doing ok here, but not fabulously.  I want to continue BF, but it seems my LO is not interested.   She accepts BF for wake up (every day) and bedtime (most days).  She repeatedly refused the afternoon BF, so I gave it up -- but she'll take a 4 oz bottle at that time - half formula, half WCM cold.  She had bad congestion this week so BFd less more often for a few days.  She won't drink WCM cold in open cup so until I take the time to warm it up, or try a sippy cup (she uses a straw cup for water), I'm offering other dairy, e.g. cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese.  DH is all about the bottle so we have two persons to transition.  Good to read what other folks are up to.  GL everyone.

  • So dh reported that the sippy went ok. at least she drank a little. as a way to keep myself committed I didn't bring my pump, but now I'm on my way home and am pretty sure my boobs are going to explode before morning. Crap. tuna, I'm already thinking you had the much better idea. fingers crossed for no mastitis.
