Babies: 9 - 12 Months

EBF- no bottles. how to wean? advice needed!

My LO will be 11 months in a couple days. she is an awesome solids eater (3 meals a day plus snacks). i have always been home with her and we never introduced a bottle (big mistake) so she EBF right from the source. She DOES take a sippy with water, but when i put BM in it she screams and WILL NOT drink it. so i finally gave up on it.

Now im wondering how i am going to wean. she nurses 3 times a day and once or twice at night. She is becoming extremely boob obsessed, and i can tell she is wanting to nurse mostly for comfort. She will latch on for a total of one or two minutes then stop and smile and move on with whatever she was doing. If i dont give it to her when she "asks" she cries her eyes out. Im pretty sure at this point my supply has tanked and she is not getting much at all.

i need some major advice as to how to wean her. I havent tried any other milks yet but after reading some posts here i might try WCM in the sippy tomorrow and see what she does.

HELP!

Re: EBF- no bottles. how to wean? advice needed!

  • Besides her being distracted, is there any reason you want to wean now?  There is no rule that says you have to stop BFing at 1 year.  She's probably nursing overnight because she isn't taking much milk during the day... do her night nursing sessions last longer?

  • the only nursing session that lasts a good amount of time is her afternoon feeding when i get home from work. she has become VERY boob obsessed lately and im thinking its because she misses me during the day. honestly, i am very tired of breastfeeding. if i could get her to take bm from a bottle or cup i would happily pump for another year. i am just REALLY over it. i feel like because i have been the sole source for feeding  (no bottles) it has caused me to almost resent nursing and i just need a break!! i absolutely love that i made it for a year but im just wondering how im going to stop. im not opposed to going a few months past her first birthday but i want to be absolutely positively done by january.
  • it would probably make more sense to say i work 5 days a week from 830 to 3. she nurses right before i leave and right when i get home...
  • I am in the same boat as you. I introduced WCM from a sippy at 9months. Just 2 ounce a day at first. Now that's all she drinks with meals, about 5-6 ounces a day. I've cut out about 2 feedings but she still nurses 3 times a day and sometimes once at night. I plan to continue cutting back this way. I have also cut out nursing for comfort, except in the middle of the night. If she is acting clingly and wanting to nurse for comfort I give her her blanket and cuddle, give her a toy, distract her with her violet toy etc. She also knows the sign for milk and says "mih-mih" when she wants to nurse so if it's just for comfort I say "no, no milk now, let's do xyz." Or I say "okay, let's get milk from your sippy." I suggest doing something similar when you know she want's to nurse. Just be consistent and cut back slowly.

I know I could easily continue breastfeeding longer but I am also ready to be done. Congratulations on BFing for a year. :-)

ETA: My little one will be 11months in a little under 2weeks.

    1. 11 months is not a year.

    2. Breastmilk or formula should be the main nutrition of your LO unless otherwise directed by your DD's pediatrician until 1 year of age.

my pediatrician told us last month that we were absolutely fine to start weaning. he does not believe the breastmilk/formula for the first year theory, and says introducing other milks at 11 months is fine. my baby eats a very good amount of solids, we did BLW and also she has never had any weight issues. also, i want to wean slowly. My pediatrician 100% agrees with all of the things i said in my post.

Same here. As long as baby can tolerate other milks it's okay and for most little ones, weaning slowly is best. You're not doing anything wrong by introducing WCM and weaning slowly now. :-)
