West Nile Virus

Any one else live in an area where there have been recent cases? I live in Houston and there have been several cases and a few have ended in death (more elderly people). I've read that the chances of a pregnancy passing the virus to the fetus is very unlikely but it's still scary. My questions is, is it really safe to use mosquito spray while KUed? Dr. Google says yes but it just doesn't seem like a good idea. Anyone have more natural approach?

Re: West Nile Virus

  • Yes. In live in DFW and it's been pretty bad. My zip code is one that has a high reported number of west nile virus cases. I emailed my OB and he said just to try and keep my skin covered and use any deet based mosquito repellant. It is scary for sure though.

  • We use OFF Botanicals, and we have not had a single bite this season. I don't live in a very heavy mosquito area, though. We have some, but it's nothing like what you have down there. I've been really curious about the little fan things you can wear.

  • Also in DFW, and moving to Austin: both areas with major WNV issues this season. In addition to normal sprays, there are also things like the Off ClipOns you can use and of course burning citronella at home.

  • I live in the Phoenix metro area and we had a case in an area right next to where I live. Thanks everyone for the tips on what can be used!

  • I use my DS's California Baby all natural bug spray. I prefer the feel and smell over other bug sprays and it is just as effective. Just make sure you are inside if they spray for mosquitos in your area. I wouldn't want to breathe that stuff in.

  • My co-worker just found out she has WNV. She has been having really bad vertigo. Initial tests did not show WNV, but a more recent workup did. I am in the Metro Detroit area.

Mosquitos usually love me, but *knock on wood* I haven't had more than 1 or 2 bites this year. I have been using Burt's Bees spray. Also, I haven't spent as much time outside this year (mainly due to fatigue and illness... not by choice!).

  • I'm in Houston also (North).  DH is wanting to get one of those mosquito zapper things but I don't even know how safe those are.

Mosquitos love me so I'm trying to stay inside most of the time but it's almost impossible to not get bitten at least once....and once is all it takes if its an infeced mosquito.  So maybe I should make OFF part of my daily beauty routine.  Real sexy but hey gotta do what you gotta do.

  • I also live in DFW and I know what you're going through. It's totally safe to use DEET repellent. I coach cross country and we run in the mornings around a lake, so I have to cover myself. I felt better because even my lo's pediatrition said to use deep woods off on him (he's only a year). The West Nile risks aren't worth it.
  • Yes, our mayor of our village was actually diagnosed with it earlier this week.

Honestly, with the heat & drought we're having this summer, we haven't spent much time outside in prime mosquito hours, persay.  I use the Badger Bug Spray that we put on DD.  It works fine for me!
