Pregnant after a Loss

UTI experience? Please come in...

If you remember I went in to the ob last week for low back cramps...the urine dip in his office came back clean, but he sensed that there was something going on, so he sent a sample off for testing.  Turns out I do have a UTI which is probably causing the cramping.  He put me on antibiotics...just wondering your experiences?  Given this is my terrifying week I'm just scared this seemingly harmless snowflake could turn into a snowball.

Re: UTI experience? Please come in...

  • I had several UTIs when I was pregnant with DD. I took Macrobid 2 or 3 times and the only thing I noticed was that it turns my urine a funny color.

Any time I felt a UTI coming on, I would drink a ton of water (to the point of making me feel sick) to flush myself out. It seemed to help a ton.

  • I've never had a UTI while pregnant, but I had PLENTY as a child and young teenager (a long story for another day). My advice is; take your antibiotics as directed. Constantly sip on water or cranberry juice, and get plenty of rest. The fact that the initial urine dip in the office came back clean, but the culture showed a UTI is actually a good sign. That means your bacteria count was so low, it couldn't be picked up with a standard test strip. Therefore, beating this infection should be a peice of cake Smile

  • Cranberry juice/cranberry pills!  I had a UTI with Emma...actually a couple (also caused "cramping")  The antibiotics helped within a few days.  After that I took cranberry pills (all natural, no harm during pregnancy) daily.  Didn't get another UTI after that.  *hugs*  The antibiotics should help.  Drink lots of water and pee as often as you drink.

  • I had a symptomless UTI and got prescribed macrobid too. I just got off of them yesterday. It changed the color of my urine and hampered my appetite. Today I just wanted to eat eat eat and I realize it's because I finally finished my pills. Whether they worked or not, I don't know. But I also learned that to avoid UTIs it is best to pee leaning forward so that you clear any pools of urine that can collect because your uterus pinches your bladder. And cranberry juice will taste less sour of you water it down a bit. Hope you feel better soon.

  • I had a UTI at the beginning of this pregnancy which caused cramping and some bleeding from my urethra (that freaked me out a bit). I was put on Macrobid and it cleared up pretty quick. As PP said the only side effect I had was darker urine.

  • I've had two UTIs this pregnancy early on and around 26 weeks I think. They gave me antibiotics, and I noticed no side effects except a change in urine color. Be sure to drink lots of water, you'll be just fine.
  • I've had 2 UTIs so far and both times I took the antibiotic and was fine. The first time I did have some pain while urinating but nothing really excruciating. The second UTI had no pain associated with it. I just had a bad urgency to go and couldn't fully empty out my bladder. My OB figured it was the early onset of a UTI and gave me some meds to take so it didn't turn into full blown infection. Only side effects I had with both times was that my urine was a different color.

  • Butting in from PAL, but I wanted to chime in.  I actually had two UTIs (both asymptomatic) with DD.  I was put on Augmentin each time I believe and they went away.  If I had a third UTI during the pregnancy my OB would have put me on antibiotics for the rest of the pregnancy, but everything cleared up well.  Sounds like your OB is on top of things, hope everything clears up soon! :)

  • I have had UTI's during pregnancy (usually without symptoms) before.  Unfortunately, the antibiotic they always put me on (Macrobid) makes me sick.  Other than vomiting, it usually is not a big deal.  I try to eat a handful of dried cranberries every day, which has been working to prevent any infections lately.  Feel better.

  • I've had kidney and bladder troubles since I was a baby, and I've had over 100 UTIs in my 33 years. Macrobid does nothing to help me whatsoever. When I've had blood or crystals in my urine the only medicine that clears it up is ciprofloxacin (which is actually treatment for anthrax, sounds scary but it's not). Cipro can be taken during pregnancy if the risk of side effects is lower than the risk of infection.

I have been symptom-free since I started taking daily supplements of AZO (non-medicated). It is safe to take 2 tablets along with prenatal vitamins during pregnancy. Whenever I feel the pressure in my lower back or burning when I pee, I take 4 tablets before bed and drink a full glass of distilled water, and by morning I'm totally fine.

My advice, though I'm not a doctor - I'm speaking only from personal experience, is don't waste your time with the Macrobid. You'll likely just have to take 2-3 more courses of it because it will not kill the bacteria, and putting too much of that junk in your body so many times could make you feel pretty horrible.

Feel better soon, and I wish you and your baby good health!!
