I'd like to make sure all of our bases are covered and we have everything we need. It got me thinking. What are your favorite baby items that you can't live without?
Stuff I used every day: boppy (brest friend is equally good), boob cover, nursing bra and/or tank, double electric pump with assorted supplies (we used medela PISA), lansinoh (didn't like the other lanolin products... too runny), my mei tai wrap, the PNP with bassinet attachment, Sophie La Giraffe, lots of receiving blankets (swaddle me didn't work for us), baby gowns (easy to pull up for diaper changes), desitin or boudreaux' butt paste, diapers (we only bought one size at a time. when he appeared to be growing, we used the last of one size and just bought bigger. it was never such an emergency to have a properly sized diaper on hand that we needed 2-3 sizes up from where we were), carseat, maxi and lightday pads.
For later on in baby;s life: fenugreek and milk thistle (had horrid supply problems), about 10 4oz and 10 8oz bottles (we used Dr. Brown's), start with preemie flow nipples instead of "1" (rec'd by BF class LC to help prevent a preference for the bottle), visine eye cleansing cloths (DS had bilateral blocked tear ducts and his eyes were goopy for WEEKS), a good blanket for you (mommy) to wrap up in for those late night feeding when it's a bit chilly, bottle/nipple drying rack.
That's about it for essentials. Everything else was kind of nice to have, but we could live without it. Like the swing and bouncer. We held him most of the time or I wore him. He did sleep in his crib in his room at night and we had a dresser with a changing table built in. We did not have toys, other than Sophie, until he was about 3 months old. I personally felt stupid waving stuff in his face he seemed to care less about. Once he pushed up on his arms, he seemed to like the baby gym and we'd put him on his back in there too. We loved his Bumbo and just ordered the strap conversion for it. he'd sit in that a lot and when he started eating solids, we fed him in that. I never minded sitting on the floor to feed him. We got a regular high chair for his first birthday and used it for close to a year. I loved our rocker/glider and used it for almost a year, but they're not a necessity. We tried pacifiers, but he never wanted them-- so contrary to many people, they're not necessary, but it does depend on the child. If DS2 likes them, he'll get them.
The two odd ball things I loved: Gerber prefold cloth diapers as burp cloths. So much more absorbent than traditional bump cloths. And my Woombie. It was the best swaddler we owned. Warning, the sizes run a little big. https://woombie.com/the_original_woombie.html
One of those cups/bowls that allows you to pre-measure your formula and separate it into three servings. The lid twists around to each individual serving. I know many who do not plan to BF, and these things are AWESOME! They fit very well into any sized diaper bag.
We "plan" to BF DD2 just as we did with DD1, but having formula on hand for EXTREME emergencies is always a good thing. Sometimes the best laid plans do not work out, so it's a good thing to have just so that you're prepared for anything. DD1 never had a good latch, so I was an EPer. We left on a day trip once to go visit DH's family and I forgot the pump shields! I tried latching her on, but it just wasn't working and we had to feed our baby. Having a small amount of formula one time didn't kill her, and it really saved our behinds!
A GOOD baby carrier. Seriously. Snuggling a fussy baby and still being able to do things around the house or whatever? WORTH EVERY PENNY.
A good double electric pump + hands free nursing bra. I work full time.
Really, that's about it. You can get away without must of the other "necessities" and until LO makes his or her debut, you won't know for sure what his/her temperment is like, so you can't really figure out what else you may need.
Which baby carrier did you prefer? I didn't have one with DD1 and am currently interested in the Moby....any preferences or suggestions?
Re: Baby items you can't live without?
'Til He returns, or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I stand.
Good Double Electric Breast Pump
Nursing Cream, I like Lansinoh brand.
Swing or bouncing seat. This allowed me to take a bath/shower, which I really needed while nursing. It also allowed me to eat!
Baby Carrier
Blankets (especially ones you can swaddle with)
Diaper rash cream/diapers/wipes (obvious, I know)
Not required, but I really liked having:
Diaper Pail
Boppy
Bottle Sterilizer
Hooter Hider (nursing cover)
Crib Soother
Activity Mat
Baby Monitor

I can't think of anything else.
