Let me first say that I am very cautious about vaccinations. I've done my research. What I can't find is a mom's perspective...
DDs 2 month appointment went fine, growing well, etc. She got the vaccinations required, and got the daycare forms. She had a bad reaction to them. The leg that they gave 2 shots in (if I had known in advance that there would be 2 in one leg, I would have refused...) was swollen, stiff, hot to the touch, and particularly the joints of that leg were red. On the doctor's advice, in addition to the tylenol, we gave her benadryl, used an ice pack, and put juice in a bottle, for the vitamin C. This went on for 2-3 days. around day 5, she came down with a cold, and now we're going on 3 weeks of steam in the bathroom, nose sucking, sneezing, coughs, etc. Her lungs are dry, though, no pneumonia worries.
Now it's coming time to schedule her 4 month appointment, where she is required to have a repeat of the same shots. The doctor's office said they can split them up into 2 appointments, but I am concerned that her immune system is taking too much of a hit, being sick for the past month.
So... Would you go "momma bear" on this? How hard should I push to get a permanent exemption to the vaccine? Should I even try?
Re: Would you continue the vaccinations?
This. DD has had a cold for the past few weeks also, and she will be getting her vaccines next week. (FWIW I had the cold before DD, and it took me a while to get over it too. I think there is just something going around right now.)
Agree with these ladies.
This.
I ALWAYS wait until my LO is completely healthy before vaccinating. My pedi agrees 100% and will never give a shot when my lo's are sick or off in any way. This is very important in pin pointing any allergic reaction. I also split all shots up by at least two weeks. I am extremely cautious with vaccines because a family member of mine had a life threatening reaction to the MMR vax. I also have a friend that lost her little brother in the 80's from a vax reaction. It doesn't stop me from vaccinating, but it makes me cautious and careful about which vax my children get and when. I always weigh the benefit of the vaccine with the possible side effects. We do not do chic pox, flu, or rotavirus.
If I were you, I would wait until you lo is healthy, split up the shots, and if your child has another reaction, depending on the shot, i might not do it again. You could then have a titer test done to check your lo's immunity.
I tried getting them to do one shot at a time, but I apparently did not fight for it. I will definitely do that or find a different doc. Thank you for reminding me about the titer test. I totally forgot that they can test for immunity.
My doctor suggested I split them up, so I know they are out there! I would find a new doc. And the titer test, you might have to pay out of pocket for it, but if you can afford it, it's worth it.
I'm sorry that she had that reaction. I don't see how the cold has anything to do with the vaccines though.
Personally, I would have them all done. I'm indifferent on splitting them although I like to get everything over with. I would absolutely NOT get an exemption. The diseases that they protect from are far worse than a sore spot on her leg.
I would split them up. L just got her 4 month shots last Friday and had a cough/cold for about 3 weeks before then. We took her to the doctor twice and everything was clear like your LO. We did all her shots at once but I hate doing it. Luckily she just sleeps the first 2 days and then has 2 days of fussiness. She's finally getting normal as of today. Good luck!
