Sleeping on my side comfortably?

I was always a side sleeper before I was pregnant, so I didn't anticipate any problems with needing to adjust to a new way to sleep. However, these little guys are sitting extremely low and honestly, some days it feels like they might be riding ON my hips.

At night, when I lay on my side, it wakes up the twin on that side. When I roll over, the other baby then gets up and and starts kicking. I could swear I'm annoying them!  :) I usually try to ignore it and sleep, but lately I've been ending up on my back every time I wake up, with hands and feet fast asleep. I use several body pillows to try to cushion my tummy, and it sometimes helps, however, I am out of sides here and wondering if anyone has had any success with another sleeping position? Maybe someone has tricks to snake charm my little cherubs into being a BIT higher? :)

Re: Sleeping on my side comfortably?

  • I would love to hear the responses to this.  I am starting to get uncomfortable on my sides.  Even getting a cramp behind my knee (kinda like the feeling you get when you've been on the phone for a really long time and then you straightening your elbow and it feels tight.... well, it's much worse than that when i straighten my knee in my sleep).  My sides also feel 'bruised'.  I have a Preggle pillow but it's so annoying trying to flip sides under the covers.

  • I feel the EXACT same way!!!!  Any time I sleep on my side, that baby on that specific side starts kicking me and I feel like I'm squishing he/ or she.  I know that I'm not hurting them, but when you are getting kicked from the baby that you are "sleeping" on, that's how you feel!  I have just ended up sleeping with my back against the headboard in a sitting up position.  I have pillows behind me and on each side of me.  I'm not comfortable AT ALL.  Sleeping is horrible at this point for me.  I end up on my back a lot.  Maybe someone has some advice, but I haven't found anything that works yet.  GOOD LUCK ladies!!!

  • All I can really do is commiserate. I can sleep on my side for short periods with the boppy pregnancy pillow under my belly and head and another pillow between my knees. But like PP said, it's such a pain to roll over that way. Most of the time I'm on my back but propped up. And the good thing about the boppy body pillow is that you can make it shaped like a baby boppy but in huge adult size, which makes me laugh to look at for some reason. But I put a couple of pillows under it and nestle into the boppy and then I can kind of lean to one side or another if laying on my back gets old. Still not as nice a pre-pregnancy sleep though!

I have also noticed that which ever side I'm on, I'll feel that baby kicking. I just assumed it was that I could feel it better because they were kinda squished and not that I was bothering them. Maybe I'm wrong though.

  • All I can say is  I have the same issue.  The only time I get comfortable and can sleep is in a recliner.  On my back is not an option and I was told to not even attempt it.  The blod flow gets restricted to the heart.  Pillows help some but not always.  If I do sleep in bed I sleep on side and back slightly.  My doctor said just a pillow proped up on one side is enough to get you off the back as long as you are mostly on the left side.  The other thing I suggest is drink some chamomile tea before bed is does help the little ones get calimer and kicks are not at strong.  Hope it helps!
  • I only carried one baby to term so I image two would put more pressure on your hips but the thing that saved me was a memory foam topper for the mattress. The first night I slept on it was heaven and no discomfort from then on.

  • I'll share a tip that has helped me with hip pain (no advice on the wiggly babies, unfortunately!)

My chiropractor told me that if I sleep with a pillow between my knees, that I should make sure my legs aren't scissored (i.e. knees should be stacked directly on top of each other) and that there is also a pillow between my ankles. Apparently, our joints are looser and when we sleep with things out of alignment it can cause pain.  This has helped with the "bruised" hip feeling.

  • Put a Snoogle between your legs and get one of those support wedges for under your belly.  That saved me.  Unfortunately by the end nothing helped with the pain.  It was horrible.  I slept in 15 minute intervals.  Fall asleep, sleep 15 minutes, wake up with searing pain in my hips, realize I have to pee, get up, waddle to bathroom crying from the pressure of the babies bearing down, sometimes have to call my husband to help me off the toilet, waddle back to bed, sleep 15 more minutes, rinse, repeat.  I have consistently slept SO much better since my babies were born than I did the last 2.5 months of my pregnancy.

  • Honestly I had to start sleeping on my couch. Kind of on my side and back. With a pillow under my stomach and between my legs. Keep the pillow more towards your hip area but still supporting you belly. Both my boys have their heads between my hips so I have extreme hip pain. The last few nights I really almost have to sleep sitting up up with my feet on my ottoman. It gets rough towards the end. I honestly don't think there's any real way around it.

  • I just figured out how to get myself comfortable when I'm sleeping on my side.  I use the Preggle pillow... the curved part is between my legs, but the straight part is up against my back.  When my side starts to hurt, I lean back a little onto the pillow.  This way I'm still on my side but it relieves some pressure.  We'll see how long this lasts.... lol
