Did your LO come home on a apnea/brady monitor?

My son was born at 35w5d, he had an apnea at one week old while in the NICU. He was in the NICU for 17 days total and came home with a monitor. The alarm has went off a dozen times or so, we have been to the sleep dr twice for downloads and they say they are all false alarms.

Can you tell me about your experiance with a monitor? Did you have false alarms? How long was your LO on the monitor? How old were they when they came off?

Re: Did your LO come home on a apnea/brady monitor?

  • We had false alarms all the time! I would be holding her, and could feel her breathing and the monitor would go off just because of the way the belt was positioned. We had a couple of false alarms when she was sleeping, too. (Those were the scariest.) I felt like the monitor provided peace of mind, though, as annoying as it was having to deal with it.

We had the monitor at home for about 5-6 weeks. She was about 12 weeks old, or 2 weeks adjusted when we got off of it. Good luck with your little guy!

My LO was on the monitor for about 2 months.  Yes, we did have false alarms.  he was like 1.5 months adjusted when he was allowed to come off.  Apnea of prematurity usually resolves around 42 weeks, but bradys sometimes don't.  There are 2 preemie mamas on here that were on their monitor for about 4 months.

    What does the doctor say?

  • Yes, but I'm afraid all our experiences are apples and oranges, you know? My guy was born at 30w6d and was in NICU for 50, home, then readmitted for 8 - all for bradycardia. We were home on the monitor for four months.

Yes, we had plenty of false alarms.

They will do a download at the end of the month and if they're all false then they'll probably take him off. But this is all probably...

    It's a pain, I know.

My baby is still on an apnea monitor and will probably stay on it through the end of October--so a total of 6 months after we came hom.  We don't really have that many false alarms.  Sometimes if DH doesn't put it tight enough (but not too tight) or if DH doesn't wet the black probes enough, or Adalyn is an absolute wiggle worm,  it will go off, but it's not that often.  We have had a few low HR go off, but they never wake us up, and only last a few seconds.  Her MD said that since she's older and bigger it's normal to have lower HRs sometimes and that it's not anything to be concerned about. We haven't had an apnea go off in months.

GL! Right now, Adalyn is only on the apnea monitor when she sleeps overnight.

  • Thank you ladies!

His dr wanted to take him off of it at 39 weeks because he hadn't had a true alarm and he said he wouldn't have one before his full term date if he hadn't had one by then. I asked to keep it a little longer, the dr is goine for the month of august so we have our next appt on the 27th of august.

Almost every single time he has had a false alarm he is one of 3 places, sleeping in his RNP, in his carseat asleep or in my arms laying down on the couch, like in my arms beside me. Yedterday he was really fussy so I brough him and laid down on the couch while I was watching TV and he had an alarm. I knew he was ok because I was right there with him. I am now scared to have him sleep in his RNP, which means I am sleeping on the couch while he sleeps in the napper on his PNP in the living room.

  • We brought our son home with a monitor on July 10th, and he's still on it. The only time we've had a true alarm was the day after we brought him home, and he brought himself out of it within 3 seconds. Since then the only time the alarm goes off is for disconnected leads, like if they're not sticking against his skin or they're shifting around. We're anxious for it to come off, but in a way it gives us peace of mind knowing that it's there.
