Play Mat Advice

Hi everyone,

As a frequent lurker and an occasional poster, I was hoping to get some advice on a small question my DH and I keep going back and forth on. We received the Infantino Vintage Twist and Fold Activity Gym as a shower gift (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3594395&fromRegistryNumber=48171312&product_skn=237953), but we also were given the Chicco Lullaby Play Yard (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10803016&fromRegistryNumber=48171312&product_skn=578639), which includes a removable play mat with toy gym. We have a limited amount of space and are trying to be sensible about how much baby gear we can accumulate, which makes us feel that it might be a good idea to exchange the Infantino Gym for another product we need that doesn't feel so redundant; then again, the Infantino Gym seems so much more stimulating for baby than the Chicco Play Yard's version and we wonder whether it would be better designed for its purpose because it's a stand-alone product. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Re: Play Mat Advice

  • If you are short on space and don't need the "play yard" aspect, then I would return the Chicco.  The infantino can be folded up and put away when LO is not using it.

  • Do the arms that cross in the play yard attach to the side of the play yard or are they attached to the mat? DD played on both her tummy and back on her mat and I wouln't be comfotable leaving her at that elevated level in the play yard. I would want the mat on the floor.

The pictures on the box of the Chicco make it look as though the "play gym" arms are detachable from the play yard, so that you can put the mat and arms on the floor. I wouldn't feel comfortable using it elevated either.

  • I have the Chicco play yard and a Fisher Price play mat.  We loved them both.  As for the play yard, it doesn't make a good play mat.  It's a recessed bassinet that just happens to have the cross bars with toys.  We used the play mat to interact with her because the Chicco just isn't at the right height to talk to the baby.  It's more for just sleeping in.  We often folded the play mat to keep it out of the way.  Hope that helps!

  • Oh, also I forgot to mention.  The Chicco cross bar is actually a big x.  It's flat.  The only way it curves like that is because you're shoving it into the corners.  But, it does attach to the corners of the mat, so it would work on the floor, it would just kinda be a pain.
