July 2012 Moms

How to find mom groups?

I've noticed some of you mentioned breastfeeding and baby carrying groups - where did you find these in your area? Are there other baby related activities/groups you all have found? I was the first of my group of friends to have a baby so I literally don't know anyone with babies and would love to find a way to meet some other moms in my area. So, ladies, tell a girl how it's done :)

Re: How to find mom groups?

  • Meetup.com, google Mom's group and your city, and check Mom's Club International's website to see if there is one in your area.

  • I found a group on Meetup.com. There were actually quite a few for my area, definitely worth checking it out!
  • I found my breastfeeding group through the class I took. The group meets at the local hospital (it's organized by the LCs there and they come to the meetings!). It's free and open to all pregnant and nursing mothers (I didn't deliver at that hospital, fwiw).

I'm going to join MOPS when it starts back up in September. It meets at the church I grew up at and a childhood friend is active in it.

As far as activities go, I just looked at different things I knew about (library, Little Gym, Kindermusik, and a local kids place here) to see what age LO needed to be, when its offered, cost, etc. We won't start any of that stuff until after she has her shots since she'll be around more (and older) kids that I don't know. I also don't want to overschedule us so library lapsit will probably just be whenever we feel like it and I'll probably choose 1 class to do.

  • The hospital had a new moms group you didn't have to be BFing that I started going to when DS1 was 2 weeks old. After a few months about 15 of us who had LO's around the same age started a Facebook group and started meeting once a week at each others houses rather than at the hospital. Even though a lot of us went back to work we still try to do a mom's dinner put once a month without the kids. Or meet at parks on a random weekend, etc.

And now 3 other moms on the group have a new baby or are pregnant too, so that is nice also.

Going to that hospital group was seriously one if the best things I ever did as a new mom. I've made friends that I still have almost 2 years later. And since DS1 isn't in daycare it's nice that he gets some time with kids his age once a week.

  • Meetup.com  I belong to a mommy group just so I can get out and have some interaction with other adults and eventually have some playmates for lo. Just search for your city and it should pull up groups in your area.

Some groups have fees, but the one I belong to is like $6 a year.

  • I attended events through a local meetup.com tot group.  I also go to MOPS twice a month.  I have met a few moms in our neighborhood as well, and we get together regularly.
