DD has had a rash on wrist and hip for a few days, no fever, crankiness, etc. ( we have already had roseola, HFM, and the MMR reaction this summer) it was not bothering her either till this AM when she started itching. We took her to pedi becuase it has been 5 days. They think eczema possibly from allergies ( no new foods, soaps etc. although I did change mine and DH detergent and are changing back because the smells bothers him.)Between DH's terrible allergies and my family's super sensitive skin, this seems likely. So they said use fragrance free ( which I do but will now double check everything again) and hydrocortisone 2x daily for a week, then a week off, the on again if needed. Anything else anyone knows to do? my niece has it and they have started using coconut oil?
Re: Eczema..teach me please
We use aveno eczema lotion daily and it works great.
Also oatmeal type baby shampoo for baths, if itching gets bad I will skip bath day so skin won't dry out too much. I noticed heat outside makes eczema worse so avoid that too. FYI: my dh has bad eczema so I think that is where dd to hers from, although we had no problems until this summer when it first started.
All of those are good suggestions so you just need to see what works for you.
We only do baths once a week, twice if he is really dirty. After he gets out, we try and lotion him up right away, like within 5mins since it helps the lotion and other creams absorb more.
There are a bunch of Dec LOs with eczema so you are not alone. Good luck finding something that helps out
It is definitely a trial and error thing with kids with eczema! We have had luck with a regimen of one bath a week, nightly lotioning with Cetaphil with Restoraderm, and a hydrocortisone cream if he has an outbreak (usually behind his knees and inner elbows.
His skin is so much better now, and we can even do some fragrance stuff now, like California baby scented bubble bath and Mustela face wash. But we definitely did fragrance free until we had it under control.
Good luck! Eczema stinks, and just be on the lookout for food allergies, because they often go together. A lot of the December babies who have eczema also have a food allergy of some sort (A has a peanut, soy, and egg allergy)
O has a milk and peanut allergy. From what the allergist said, eczema is a pretty good indicator of an allergy. Not always of course, but the two frequently go hand in hand. Also, just because there hasn't been any problems up until now doesn't mean that one hasn't developed recently.
Yep, all of this! C has milk and peanut and maybe mild to egg now. Asthma is the third potential leg in this icky triangle. Hopefully none of our LOs develop it though.
Ugh, yes, my husband has the food allergy/asthma/eczema trifecta. It can be so miserable for him. I am really hoping we avoid the asthma.
2012 Reading Challenge
DH has every seasonal and environmental allergy and asthma so that is what the Dr is thinking might be causing this. We have not seemed to have food allergies, but I am have not tried nuts or shellfish yet and I am now waiting till we get this under control. Thank you for the ideas and suggestions.
