So I went for the ultra sound last week and they drew my blood the same day.
I received the results of the ultra sound the same day and had to wait for the blood work results today.
The ultra sound results were great - I don't know the numbers but the lining behind the neck was very thin and a nasal born was seen.
The genetic counselor called today with the blood work saying "she had good news". She told me the 2 hormones she tested for was "1 in 10,000" which was great and that my percentage or risk/ratio for DS was "1 in 648". Then she told me how if I wanted additional testing for the second trimester I could (which was weird bc she told me my results were good).
It is "1 in 648" number that alarmed me because I had this same test done when I was 30 and that number was "1 in 10,000" (I had my LO at 31) and now I will have this baby at 32. She told me that the average women at my age risk is something like 1 in 400 so my test results were good bc it went up reducing the risk.
I just got off the phone so uneasy, I am not sure why. I have looked online and so many people had "risk statistics" much worse and all turned out ok.
Anyone really understand these results? Am I worrying for nothing?
Re: Kind of worried about NT results
I think you are likely worrying for nothing. I thought 1/400 was above the threshold for testing. It's less than a 1% risk.
I tested 1/179, I had a level 2 ultrasound and my ultrasound showed no markers. I felt like there wasn't a valid reason for me to do more evasive testing (amnio) so we passed on additional testing.
If you turn your ratio into a percentage, it's .15%. That is extremely low.
There are women who get a 1 in 10 or 1 in 5 ratio (10-20%) and the odds are still in their favor but they have a better reason to be scared. I understand you preferred your previous percentage, but you really don't have any reason to freak out.

Try to imagine a room full of 648 people. That's a lot of people. I know it isn't a comforting as 1 in 10,000 odds, but it's still really good odds.

It's a boy!
Yeah, my result with DD was 1:7500, and with this baby, it is 1:2000 -- and my age was 33 and 35, respectively, so not much apart.
I had the same reaction -- even though 1:2000 is good, comparatively, I thought it was bad next to DD's.
I talked to my OB about doing the MaterniT21 test for a more accurate result. He said that although the screening does have somewhat high false-positive rates, it has very low false-negative rates. He also pointed out that for my age, the average is 1:240, so 1:2000 should have me bouncing off the walls.
So I am sure you are fine. But I do understand -- that difference between the two is annoying.
Second, that she suggested doing a second round of blood work in the 2nd tri does not mean anything bad. With DD, I just had the first trimester U/S and blood work, but with this LO, my doc (a different doc) suggested the two rounds -- this is called a sequential screen. It simply gives more accurate results! So with the first tri stuff alone, it catches something like 85% of cases, but with the sequential (both trimesters), it catches like 95%. I would probably do it -- why not? Your odds will likely improve a lot with the second round.
It will also give a result for neural tube defects -- the first tri screen alone does not do that.
Hope that helps.
