My SIL is all crazed with this red 40 dye and her kids. Just wondering on your thoughts on the topic. I looked it up in google and found some articles on it but I don't know how strongly I feel about it.
Do you mean crazed with avoiding it? We avoid all unnatural food dyes with DD. They can really mess with their systems.

Crazed with avoiding it. I just feel like I haven't really heard much about it other than from my SIL. Haven't seen it on the news, newspapers, parent magazines..if it's so bad then how come there isn't more information on it? Is the main reason to avoid it is because of behavior problems?
I've seen red dyes in particular associated with ADHD and behavioral disorders. I haven't done a lot of research on it, but I have heard a lot about various dyes causing problems--especially in children already prone to hyperactivity and difficult behaviors.

It's crazy ...all of these things coming out that are linked to children's behaviors..it's scary! I'm going to have to start reading labels more carefully !

Because why would the companies using it and other additives want you to know how bad it really is? Why do companies using GMOs oppose so strongly to food labeling? Because it hurts their bottom line. Why isn't in parents magazines? Who pays the bills for them? These companies and their advertisement.
You can call me crazy too but I go to great lengths to avoid all artificial colors and flavors, and another list a mile long of other food additives, which means nothing that comes in a box, or frozen, or made at a factory except for certain snacks occacionally.
I haven't heard anything about red dyes being a problem for many years. I remember when I was really young, they didn't have red M&Ms because of an issue with red dye, and there was a big hoopla about it when they brought them back, but since then....nothing. Oh, well, I did work with a girl once that was allergic to certain dyes, and I think red was one of them, but that's it.
Then why do we know so much about artificial sweeteners and how they can affect our health? It's just odd to me.
See, a lot of people don't know about that. And I thought the dangers of artificial dyes were well-known.
It's reasonable to believe that anything artificial consumed in large amounts can cause health problems. Our bodies weren't meant to process fake foods.

Red dye has become a big deal in England over the last few years and even banned in some products, but it's not really crossing over. I don't know whether it's the same formulas.
It drives me nuts how there are people out there continuing to make these products knowing that it can harm others! I like the idea of Europe banning these products to protect the people.

Yup. I find it appalling how soo many things banned in Europe are still allowed in the U.S and that is why I think as mothers we have to do our homework and make sure what feed our kids or put on their skins or what they play with is safe. Companies are not looking out for the health of our kids, not the even the government is, it's up to us. It sounds extremist but it's true.
I 1000% agree! I'm trying my best to give DD organic food, no juice, and no artificial sweeteners. Im also reading labels for the high fructose syrup which I know is horrible and now the red 40 dye! Can anyone add anything else to the list?? Thank you ladies!

If I list all things I don't allow in our home it would take me hours.
For food I have learned from the Michael Pollan books and from the 100 days of real good blog.
For personal care product safety and well most household items from toys to cleaners I refer to safemama.com, the EWG, books Ive read, and my personal research for my blog.

Then again, when we went shopping for a carseat for DD in Germany, we asked for a woman to show us the options, and she did. I asked if they had any for rear-facing, and she said no, she had never heard of rear-facing for kids older than infants. So DD will be rear-facing until she grows out of her bucket seat, and that's it. I'd prefer to keep her rear-facing, but it didn't look to be an option. Yet, anyway. So there's an opposite example for you.

The United States allows 7 artificial dyes (synthetic is a better word) and red is one of them - all are bad and are made from petroleum! Red gets the press because it is used the most. AND there is tons of research showing what it does. And this isn't new. Back in the 70's Dr. Feingold was on all the talk shows when his book was published and then parents formed a support group. Watch the video on its homepage www.feingold.org We follow this diet, makes a huge difference.
