Pregnant after IF

Ladies with multiples: Did you tell your boss about multiples right away?

Hey ladies,

If all comes back okay this week with my test results, I am going to be telling my boss on Weds. during my yearly review that I am pregnant and will be taking maternity leave early next year.

So, my question is, did you tell them that you were expecting multiples when you told them?

I just don't know if I should say "I'm pregnant" or "I'm pregnant with twins." The first sounds better to me right now since I am not so far along, but the second is more straightforward and I won't have to be skirting the issue when people say "a" baby. Also, if I didn't say the "twins" part, then I would basically have to do a second announcement when I feel comfortable.  My boss and I get along really well, but I am just wondering what is more standard.

Details, details I know...

Re: Ladies with multiples: Did you tell your boss about multiples right away?

  • I did. There is no point beating around the bush IMO. I wanted them to know up front, I was about 12 weeks. Considering you could go on bedrest at any point it is a valuable piece of information. I know my employers were prepared for it.

  • I told my boss that I was pregnant and having twins at the same time.  I think it is just easier that way and honestly, I don't think it made any difference to him at all. Do whatever you are comfortable with....though I can honestly say that thanks to IF it is hard to ever really be comfortable with things and not worried!

  • I told them about it being twins at the same time I announced the pregnancy.  I believe I waited til around 14 weeks.
  • I think I said, "I'm pregnant" and after the excitement and congrats came, I said, "There's something else. It's twins." I think it is so important that you are upfront with the twin news, as I found my bosses to be much more understanding about my not feeling well or any complications that kept me at home.

  • Thank you so much for all of your awesome advice as usual. As long as our testing comes back a-ok, I will be announcing the twins news along with the general pregnancy news.

Hopefully at some point I will not be overthinking every single little thing about this pregnancy, but you guys are incredibly helpful and kind every step of the way.

  • I ended up telling my boss last week, at 8wks.  What I said was, "I'm pregnant (pause for response)... with triplets".  Then the freak out on her end began :)

I'm very much a planner and am the manager of my office, so I felt it was necessary to tell my boss now because not only are these babies expected in only 6 months, but the odds of bedrest are pretty high.  I needed to make sure we started planning sooner rather than later.  Another reason for mentioning multiples is due to the extra MD appts that I'll be having.

    Good luck!
