What where the "stressful" things that happened for your LO's 1st Birthday party?

I am curious to see if any of you ladies ran into any stressful situation for your LO?s Birthday party or was it smooth sailing?   Plus for the Mama?s who have not yet had their LO?s Birthday party this can be like a help guide or things to avoid.

Re: What where the "stressful" things that happened for your LO's 1st Birthday party?

  • So for us the most Stressful part was the CAKE! Our LO's party was 8/19 so we did all our grocery shopping the day prior. So while we were at Wal-Mart we thought it would be best to check on our cake to make sure all was fine and would be ready for the following day. So we go and turns out we got to check with the Bakery Manager Pam. Well turns out they have my order but no attachment for the design that will be on top of the cake! They start looking around..saying they saw it but no clue where it went..one lady says oh they cleaned it out and threw it away! So I start to get really mad and upset as well as my DH. So I tell the manager well what am I suppose to do this is your error and she replies "It is not my problem" Oh hell no! I was like really did you just tell me it is not your problem!   Then she is like well what do you want me to do...I was like well not tell me it is not your problem..are you telling me it is my problem? So then here is the kicker she says besides we do not have any rice paper to do the design anyways!....I was like and you are barley telling me this now..when I come to check to see if all is well with the order I put in 2months ago. Then this other lady steps in and says well we would have called today at 11 to tell you and I was like honey it is 1pm!   So then finally I tell her can't you check another Wal-Mart to see if they have the rice paper and I will see if I can get the design from my graphic designer (no real designer lol) she goes sure...and I was like ya you should have offered that not me have to tell you.   So then yes the bakery manager Pam says she will pick up the rice paper and just for me to bring the design. Okay I come back the same day with my ?graphic designer? friend Brandon and give the paper to another lady there who was with Pam and she says okay all is fine they will get it done and have all ready at 12pm sharp. Everything sounds great right?nope.   Then the next day (Birthday Party day) I get a call at 8am from the bakery manager Pam and she tells me she cannot due the design for copy right reasons! When 2months ago I had put the order in and no one said any of this or just yesterday when I brought the design again with my "graphic designer (my friend who is actually a designer)" so if they where to give me any problem. I was on the phone for about 30minutes and then finally for a co-manager at Wal-Mart and she said she would get the cake done and free of charge.   So long story short here...lol....Check on your cake to make sure all is fine.

  • As you know Duff, we had a cake problem too...Also from Wal-Mart. We went in and got it ordered a month in advance with all our special touches. My mom, brother and I went in to get the cake 2 hours before the party. I told them that I was there to pick up my cake and explained what it looked like. They were like, "Ummm, we dont have a cake that looks like that". I said, "Excuse me!! What the hell are you talking about?" The lady then told me that the guy that took the order just put the word "blue" instead of the actual name of the cake. Instead of calling me and asking what cake I needed, they just went ahead and found a cake with the word "blue" in the title and made that. I was so pissed, I flat out called them idiots. I asked them why the fluck did they not call me!! All they had to say was. "Sorry, we can fix it a little bit." They only thing they did was stick the crown on top.

This is pretty much what the cake should have looked like

And, this is what we got....

Also, we had drama with my in-laws. They are rude, mean people that think everything should go their way no matter what. As soon as my FIL started the throw around an attitude, I flat out told them that they will NOT ruin my son's birthday party and they better leave right now. More drama...MIL decided it would be fun to make DS #1 cry....more drama...and my mother stepped in to send them packing. They are not welcome to see the kids ever again.

  • Mine came after the party because I ordered WAY too much food. I felt terrible that I wasted so much money. Some of it we could freeze but we gave the rest away to my dad's old coworkers.

We had lots of food/drinks too I sent everyone from the party with a whole lot of goodies. LOL we even gave some bottled water to a dog at the park because the owners did not bring water for the pup...he was a hit with the kids at the party.

Wow Wash that is huge difference now I can totally understand why you where so upset seeing the difference in the design..YA chocolate and white frosting is a huge difference.

  • I was so concerned about not getting enough photos of the even that I forgot to be in more of them!

Also, I let someone else hold my son while we sang and he was able to grab the flame on the candle and he got burned! :( Thankfully it was a very, VERY minor burn!

  • Otis ended up with hand foot and mouth disease on his birthday... we didn't get to party -- cancelled the entire event.

  • The only stressful situation was when my MIL asked if my cousin in law and her family could come.  They had three kids and were soooo well behaved.  It was the cousin's husband that was stressful!  He just kept making stupid comments.  He got all nasty with me when I asked DH to change Logan while I was getting drinks for everyone... he said "Wow... why the hell can't you change him? You are his mother! It's not a man's job to take care of the children!"  -- I was about to completely go ballistic, but my father chimed in and put that jackass in his palce!  Oh, and the first thing he said when he walked into my house was "OMG, this is a small house!"  WOW...I didn't think it was that small.  It's not huge by any means, but it's a little over 1600 sq ft.  UGH... jackass...

  • Thanks for posting this. Our party is 9/1, so I'm taking notes.

My biggest fear is food-related.I always over-do the food and end up with lots of leftovers.

I decided to be sensible with the food, and then discovered that DH invited more co-workers than I anticipated. I'm hoping I have enough food planned, and that people actually show up so that we don't end up with a lot of leftovers.

And from reading all of the cake stories, I'm glad that my BFF is going to be in town to make ours.

  • First of all DD was sick on her birthday so we had to cancel her "big" party and we invited only family. Luckily she was feeling better by the end of the day and she had a good time:)

My crazy mother got offended when I told her that the spaghetti did indeed have meat sauce. Apparently she's a vegetarian(had to have been VERY recent), why didn't you call and tell me so I could set aside some without meat? There was salad and garlic bread, cake and cookies. But I guess that wasn't good enough. 20 minutes after she arrived she said she was going to get something from her car and never came back. No goodbye to Ella and a flat out lie to me. She text me a week later like nothing had happened.

I would be VERY upset about all those cake problems. My cake was from Wal-Mart and luckily it turned out great. But I don't know if I will trust them again with such an important cake. Did you guys at least get the free smash cake?

  • Duff- I am really sorry you had cake problems too :(

Mrs. Case- Tell me about it, LOL! Aww, I'm sorry Lincoln got burned!

    J&K- Poor baby! :'(

Fweetie- He is lucky you didnt punch him!

Mgarza1231- Nope, no free smash cake. But the cake itself was free after SO got done chewing some asses. They did fail on the smash cake as well, though... I wanted a giant cupcake to use as his smash cake. I told them the date of his photo shoot and they said that I could not pre-order them but, they will for sure have them on the day I need one....Guess what the didnt have when I got there to get it? I had to pick a random cake that they had on the shelf. Luckly I found one that when with the colors of his shoot..... See...

Will you please high five your dad for me? Seriously. Your cousin in law sure married a first class a-hole.

    No. Way. What nerve!

As for us, I got majorly stressed out when DH announced he couldn't find the charger for our camera battery the morning of the party. I asked some friends to bring their camera, and the pictures they did are pretty good, but I am a little disappointed there isn't a really good one of DD digging into her cupcake.

Also? I found the damn charger. It was in the effin camera bag. Men.

But other than that, I must say everything went smoothly. And looking at Duff and Wash's posts, I'm glad I made her cake(s) myself!

  • Wow, those are some terrible cake problems! DD's party is on Friday night, and I'm making her cake (cupcakes in the shape of the Very Hungry Caterpillar, actually). I was pretty stressed about it but it doesn't sound like ordering a cake was that much easier for everything...

Seriously!?!? Ok thats it! I am DONE with this Wal-Mart! Maybe the one on the other side of town is better..

  • My mother was my stress.  As you know G is not my FIs LO but he def treats him as if he was and so does his family.  My mom does not like I guess she feels like she should be the only Grandma or something I have no idea.  Anyways we have not all be together sence LO was born and all sh*t hit the fan.  Anywho I was so stressed about how everyone was going to get together.  My mother did make a few comments that I am not happy about but other than that things when well.
