Cute lunch check-in

Week three and I can't believe how much my DD's appetite has grown already! Sending in bento containers has worked out well. I pack her lunchbox with a bento box, ice pack and usually a metal water bottle. Her food isn't squished and it's all laid out in front of her, ready to eat. The two-tiered containers are a little tricky for her, so we're probably going to stick with single boxes for now. Also we practiced for a while this summer putting all of her picks back in her box as she went (rather than setting them on her placemat as she used to do at home), and so far everything I've sent with her has come back home.

I saw a picture online of a really cute pig bento. I tried to recreate it here, but it was a total fail! Oh well, I still liked his curly little cucumber tail. Cucumber/ cream cheese sandwich, a few cherries and a plum in the top tier, and cantaloupe in the bottom tier.

Hedgehogs! Carrots, a container with a few Raisinets, Wheat Thins, raisins (the "Jumpy" label is an inside joke), cherries, cheese hedgehog sandwich (can you see his teeny little nose?), nectarine and a few hedgehog picks.

Cat! Would you believe this is the only cat pick we have? Ham & cheese-on-top sandwich with cupcake topper ears (don't put them on cheese overnight - a little bit of the sugar started to melt and left a puddle in the morning). The face details are made with dried seaweed, cut out with a punch. Dog bone graham crackers, blueberries and cherries, a box of raisins, plus a layer of cantaloupe. These mini fork picks are super handy for keeping hands clean at school.

No real theme here. Pitted cherries, cucumbers and carrots, leftover chicken noodle casserole with a "pea pod" cheese detail, plus a container with a few mini M&Ms and an applesauce pouch. Sending in a plain fork just didn't seem right, so she got a little message on it. This was a lot of food. She said she was full after the fruits & veggies, and only ate the cheese off the noodles. However, we went to the grocery store directly after school and she put the box on her lap in the cart and polished off everything else!

Minnie! There's a layer of blueberries under a homemade PB/honey sandwich, with a cheesy Minnie Mouse (the Minnie cutter is from Party City, the bow cutter is from a Hello Kitty set - I also could have used two heart sprinkles), cucumbers, a little silicone suitcase with a koala cookie inside, plus a sidecar  of cantaloupe. I need to go to the grocery store!

Have a great week everyone and PIP your cute lunches here! The participation has been great and I hope those of you that aren't posting are still getting some good ideas for adding a little bit of fun & love to your kids' lunches.

Re: Cute lunch check-in

  • Where is a good place to get bento boxes and good lunch containers? Your lunches are adorable!  Do you make them at night or in the morning?

  • Thanks! I get most of my bento supplies at allthingsforsale.com. Places like Party City and the grocery store will often have cute silicone containers and picks, so I always keep an eye out.

I have been making her lunches mostly the night before because the school bus comes at 6:45 a.m. and I already get up very early with my teething infant. I take the pictures in the morning after they've sat in the fridge overnight and they still look good. I've told DD to tell me if anything seems soggy but she says it's fine. I always make sure to put a divider between wet and dry foods because they do sit overnight in the fridge.

     HTH!

  • Where do you get the dividers to keep the wet and dry foods separate? I love your ideas!! Great job: and thanks for the tips.
  • The dividers are called "baran" and most of mine are silicone and purchased from allthingsforsale.com. However, you can separate foods by using folded up pieces of wax paper or food paper (from World Market, used to line hamburger trays), silicone or paper muffin cups, or a food in its packaging (like string cheese). HTH!

  • Nice work! That top box is so pretty! And good call on putting silverware in the long compartment of the Trio - I've never known what to do with that space so I've never gotten that box.
